Video – Northeastern @ VCU
The Siegel Center witnesses a hard fought match up for first place in the CAA. VCU suffers a tough loss and Matt Janning and the Huskies of Northeastern take sole possession of the top spot after this aggressive game. Eric Maynor dropped 30 points, Brandon Rozzell 16 (career high) in a losing effort at home. Watch as Coach Grant tries to find the silver lining and Janning replays the scuffle under the rim.

I gotta say – after watching the replay of that altercation… you have to give it to Matt Janning for staying level-headed.

Wow…
I hate to say it, but Maynor should be punished for that move. We have to set an example at VCU.
I thought I saw Janning try to hammer-punch Maynor as he was coming down from the shot. Regardless of how terrible the referees were VCU needed to capitalize on the turnovers they kept forcing the last 2 minutes of the game.
NU’s coach said it the best, ” We came out shoot uncharacteristically with the 3 pointers and if there were 2 minutes left Eric Maynor and the rams would have found a way to win.”
NU played the game of the season here and if it plays out we get a rematch with them in the finals of the tournament. The roles will be reversed.
I do not think you can judge E. Maynor on that video. In the video you cannot see his feet. He did not have balance and the first thing you do to catch yourself in a fall is extend your arms and hands. This is not his fault. That ref should be fired from the league. I hope he doesnt ref anymore games especially the tournament.
thought that fracas went down differently. couldnt really tell from where i was sitting. now i know!
Maynor did seem a little off balance on the landing so it may have been an accident, though the force of his hand and the image on his face make it seem like it was intentional. Regardless, they called the foul on the blocker, so Maynor had the right of way to continue his actions (regardless of whether Jannings was there or not).
But the scuffle didn’t bother Jannins at all, he played it cool and wasn’t in the way. Where the technical shoulda came into play and been called on was when Adako came over and intentionally, forcably pushed Maynor. That is the uncalledfor scuffle that Maynor did not provoke.
I watched it all in freeze frame forward and back. Maynor can’t continue forward cause of fans. As he comes back to stop standing over Janning, Adako confronts him, leaving him no (visible, because he could’ve stepped back but it wasn’t in his sight) place to walk as Adako takes his space.
Maynor, after being pushed already by a northeastern player tries to make it back to the court instead of in the laps of fans. As he walks back (over Janning, who should’ve been up by now) Spates then gets in his face (possible with good intentions, but Northeastern didn’t have a good track record with good execusions). So that is what peeved Maynor, and then since we all know the “white” ref was inadequate, Maynor was just informing him of the technical that Adako executed!
To be honest maynor was at fault when he pushed matt janning but i think it was an accident he was just a little to excited is all after the basket not realizing that jannings was still their but overall we were robbed by the refs.
Did Maynor get the offensive foul in that altercation? Did he get a technical? He should have…
maynor should get one game suspension for throwing the punch AFTER the altercation. Look at the video after he comes back from being pushed from over top of Janning. He comes back in and tries to throw a punch at the NE player. Classless.
Definitely one of the best game atmosphere’s I have ever seen at any level.
*atmospheres
I think the play under the basket was a little overblown. Maynor’s left foot looked to be under Jannings may be why he stood there for a second, doesn’t look like he had anywhere to go. The NE player that pushed Maynor may have escalated the whole situation. Other than the Burgess push I see the other players as trying to calm the situation. Then here comes Hess pushing players out of the way. Rozzell and Nixon were trying to help Jannings up. However, Hess charging at Maynor was very unprofessional and if not for the coach stepping in could have really been a serious fight…fans included. If Maynor said something that Hess didn’t like he should have T’d him up or tossed him out of the game. IMO
I think it is a mistake to let fans sit that close to the court. Fan are there to see basketball, not to touch players or get in their face The fans on the court line definitely played a role in “how things went down” during the NE game. Did you see how those “fans” acted. Up in everyone’s face – who knows what they shouted to the Refs – and that could have influenced the refs to watch VCU closer. who knows. Bad sportsmanship – Let’s move them back in the Fan Section. Somebody tell the VCU Athletic Dept or whoever is in charge.
Couldn’t disagree more Sassy.
If the fans get out of line you simply throw them out. In terms of atmosphere…I’ll take Cameron Indoor with their fans on top of the players any day over the fans buried 3 ft. below Vandy’s home court (also about 15 feet outside of the in bounds lines)..
Love the atmosphere, love the fans on top of the players…I wish we had more seats on top of the court.
