Eric Maynor v. BCS Schools

vcugmu23You know, one of the more annoying things I’ve had to hear about Eric Maynor since he nailed that shot against Duke and gained instant credibility was,…”you know, he’s good…but his numbers wouldn’t be nearly as good if he played in the (Insert BCS conference here)”. So with Draft Day just around the bend, I decided I’d investigate just how well he’s played against BCS teams throughout his career here at VCU. Maybe some Knicks fan pushing for Eric will dig up this little article and use it to justify why he thinks NY should take our boy over Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, or Jeff Teague.

note* I only broke down his sophomore through senior seasons…because our ex-coach…Jeff Capel, decided Eric served the team better as a backup to Alexander Harper than in the starting rotation.

06-07
v. Duke*: 39 min, 8-16, 3 reb, 8 ast, 3 stl, 3 to, 22 points
v. Pitt*: 42 min, 5-14, 1 reb, 8 ast, 3 stl, 1 to, 14 points

Averaged – 40.5 min, 18 points, 2 boards, 8 ast, 3 steals, 2 tos …43% shooting

07-08
v. Miami*: 35 min, 10-20, 3 reb, 6 ast, 2 stl, 1 to, 27 points
v. Ark*: 38min, 3-6, 4 reb, 5 ast, 3 stl, 2 to, 12 points
v. Maryland: 38 min, 8-16, 8 reb, 5 ast, 1 stl, 2 to, 25 points

Averaged – 37 min, 21.4 points, 4.6 boards, 5.3 ast, 2 steals, 1.6 tos…50% shooting

08-09
v. VAN: 38min, 12-19, 3 reb, 3 ast, 5 stl, 3 to, 31 points
v. OU*: 33 min, 5-18, 5 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl, 8 to, 15 points
v. UCLA*: 39 min, 5-15, 6 reb, 7 ast, 1 stl, 2 to, 21 points

Averaged – 36.6 min, 22.6 points, 4.6 boards, 4.3 ast, 3 steals, 4.3 tos…42% shooting

Career average v. BCS as a starter: 37.7 min, 20.75 points, 4.1 boards, 6 ast, 2.6 steals, 2.75 turnovers ….45% shooting

The teams with the * were NCAA tournament teams, so 6 of those 8 made the Big Dance.

Not bad Eric.

    Very nice breakdown!

Are the Knicks really looking at him? VCU alum and Native New Yorker, I think id flip out, if we got Maynor…first in line at the store for that jersey….

  • admin says:

The Knicks need to be looking at EVERYONE. Nate Robinson can score but he’s still incredibly undersized, Chris Duhon remains Chris Duhon… neither play great D. I’ve just seen a lot of chatter among Knicks fans calling for a PG, Maynor being high on that list.

And as a fan of Eric Maynor…I’d love to see if D’Antoni could turn him into the next Steven Nash
