Rodriguez Returning to VCU?

Submitted by on May 21, 2009 – 9:22 AM4 Comments

As it’s been “reported” on our message board for some time now… Joey Rodriguez is officially attempting a return to VCU. Tim Pearrell of The Richmond Times Dispatch has the details here…

Joey will have some hurdles to clear after already registering for classes as D2 Rollins College, but looks forward to a return to the black and gold. “”I missed it,” he said. “I never thought I would, but I did. I’m pretty excited. Hopefully, everything works out.”

I think Mr JRod is a selfish young man. He left because he wanted to be closer to his family and he wants to return because he wants a shot at professional basketball. Nothing about VCU or his teammates. He left knowing they didn’t have a PG and probably knew Eblen would not come if he left. Granted play professionaly is every young kids dream but to publicly announcing that’s the reason he wants to return shows what he is about. He’s been gone a whole two weeks and misses it already. After two months back in Richmond I guess he will miss home again and be ready to return to Florida.

Selfish….Joey….NO! Those two words dont even go together. I am however surprised to hear that he wanted to leave as far as sports are concerned, but lets not forget. Like many others, first and foremost, Rodriguez is a college student; then, a student athlete. He has the same burdens as others as far as his collegiate career is concerned, and additional pressure and stress as far as being a student athlete is concerned. It’s expected of a college student to get homesick; especially during sophmore year. And while the thought of professional basketball may be in his mind, reason enough to return, there are plenty more schools closer to his hometown, that he could attend, that would also do the same “advancement” for his sports career. From knowing him personally throughout my freshman year, could it be that he is learning a valuable lesson that many Rams don’t learn until their 3rd year: “I do love VCU afterall!”? Give the man a break!

I agree with Lefty on this one….if you want to come back, cite your teammates as the reason, he has no shot at professional ball in the states anyway….

If you don’t know someone personally, you don’t know him at all. He left VCU for his family (because they live in Florida) but after attending the college and living on the campus he realized it wasn’t a right fit for him and he missed his teammates. Anyone playing Division 1 basketball has a shot of going professional.
