Utah has Big Love for Eric Maynor

Submitted by on June 26, 2009 – 11:32 AM4 Comments

EMaynorJazzVertThe Utah Jazz selected Eric Maynor with the 20th pick in the first round of last night’s NBA Draft. The Jazz desperately needed a talented PG to play behind All-World guard Deron Williams under Head Coach Jerry Sloan.

“I’m coming there to work, man — do whatever the team needs me to do,” Maynor said in a conference call. “Deron Williams is one of the best point guards in the NBA. For me to come in there and learn from a guy like that I think will be great for me.”

The selection of Maynor was greeted with mixed reaction from Jazz fans as GM Kevin O’Connor announced the selection.

“If you look at the success that Eric has had in his college career, you’ll understand why we’re happy to have him,” general manager Kevin O’Connor said after making the pick Thursday night. “He’s thin, but he’s got good size. He sees the floor well and each year he got better.”

Maynor becomes the first VCU player drafted since Sherron Mills went to the Timberwolves in ’93.

Pretty lame with the “Big Love” comment. Bigotry is alive and well in Virginia.

hey, just thought it was funny since its the name of a poplar TV show that takes place in Utah and coincidently to that, a former VCU player, Eric Maynor was drafted by Utah the other night.

Sorry you allowed that one to rub you the wrong way. Better luck next time!

As a VCU graduate who lived and worked in Salt Lake City [number of years in the late 90's] and then returned to Richmond, I know SLC & Richmond. I’ve watched Eric Maynor grow as a player; I know Jazz fans will be very happy with this 20th pick. Eric will come in and contribute in a back-up roll immediately, and over the years may remind Jazz faithful of a similar medium-build, hardworking pg who had excellent worth ethic and court vision: Stockton.

    Blake,

It’s hard for me to imagine this article’s title, in any way, constituting a “stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one’s own” (i.e. ‘bigotry’).

I find it even more difficult to discern how this title supports the audacious claim that, “stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one’s own,” is alive and well in Virginia.

Perhaps I have missed a nuance in your comment; assuming it to be an intentionally uncouth condescension. If I have misinterpreted as such, please pardon my naivete.

    Regards,

    Kenny

    VCU Ramnation,

Keep up the witty titles and great stories! I will always have Big Love for Eric in Utah!

    Respect.
