Larry-less Rams pluck Blue Hens

RozzellBrandon Rozzell lead the Rams with a career high 19 points in VCU’s second conference victory Saturday afternoon against the Delaware Blue Hens (5-11, 1-4).

“We had to bounce back”, Rozzell said after the Rams had lost the previous two games, both CAA losses. “Guys came into practice the last couple of days with a whole different focus”.

The Rams were forced to fill in the 6′11 235lb hole left by Larry Sanders who was forced to watch the game while serving a 1 game suspension handed down by the CAA.

VCU saw a double digit first half lead shrink to 3 by halftime, but a balanced attack and a solid second half defensive effort, giving up only 5 points over the first 10 minutes of the second halfwere enough to move the Rams to 10-4 on the season, 2-3 in conference.

Jamie Skeen and Bradford Burgess posted double doubles each. Skeen with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Bradford one better at 12 points with 10 boards.

“I’m just glad we won”, said Skeen. “A win is what I’m really worried about, a double double is the last thing I’m worried about.”

Both teams shot over 50% in the first half, but VCU was able to force their style of play on the Blue Hens the rest of the way, holding Delaware to just 8 of 25 shooting the remainder of the game.

Kirill Pishchalnikov saw extended playing time in Sanders’ absence, posting 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block in a season high 18 minutes of play.

Joey Rodriguez lead all players with 6 assists and added 10 points and 2 steals.
