Former VCU men’s basketball coach Dana Kirk has died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 74.
Kirk Coached the Rams three seasons between ’76-’79 where he lead VCU to a 67-23 record. After leaving VCU he coached Memphis State through 1986, including an ’85 trip to the Final 4 which was eventually vacated when the school was found guilty of NCAA violations.
He was fired by Memphis after the 1986 season before being indicted on income tax evasion.
Watching a 15 point lead dissolve into an overtime loss against George Mason…well, that hurts. Watching an 8 point halftime lead against an undermanned JMU team (now 4-11 in CAA play) resulting in our second loss in a row, not only makes for a sleepless night but creates a lingering doubt in even the most faithful of Ram fans.
Two halftime leads, two losses.
There were many uncertainties heading into the 09-10 hoops season. For starters, how do you replace your all-time leading scorer/assist man, Eric Maynor, who oh-by-the-way played the most important position in college basketball? Obviously, losing NBA talent (20th pick overall) is never a positive for a team who last sent a representative to “the league” in 1993.
