PAYBACK WEEK!

PaybackweekAfter jumping out to a hot start in out of conference play, the Rams (12-4, 4-3) dropped 3 of their first 4 games in the Colonial. The first of which was a 1 point heartbreaker just an hour down 64 East against William and Mary.

VCU Lead by as many as 17 points that game, including a 13 point halftime lead they were unable to close out as David Schneider hit a game winning free throw with just seconds remaining.

The black and gold get their first chance at redemption this Wednesday night, 7:30 at home against the Tribe (which will most likely sell out, so pick up your tickets tomorrow at the Siegel Center box office or by calling 828-RAMS).

Tony Shaver’s team is playing some of the best basketball in the history of their program including two road wins against ACC teams: a 10 point win at Wake Forest, and an equally impressive domination of Maryland.

The Tribe sit atop the CAA with an impressive 6-1 conference record (14-3 overall).

If the Rams want to have any chance at winning a regular season CAA crown (and a Friday night bye come CAA tourny time), it all starts this week with rematches against William and Mary and the Huskies of Northeastern.

This Wednesday’s matchup should be electric as students return from winter break.

VCU follows that game with a road game at the never crowded Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.

Both teams are top 100 RPI teams, William and Mary currently sits at 27th, Northeastern at 64th.

With a slew of VCU road games this week, we took some time to get to know some of the familiar faces that make home games at the Stu so much fun.

Hard working and talented, the VCU Gold Rush Dancers put a lot of effort into their routines during halftime and game breaks. We thought we’d go behind the curtain just to see exactly how they get so good and what makes them the best dance team in the CAA.

Photos: VCU vs. Northeastern

It was a rough start to a 5-day work week on Monday when the Rams lost to a strong defensive effort from Northeastern. Both Larry Sanders and Joey Rodriguez were held to just 12 points, while Northeastern’s Manny Adako put up 23 and helped shut down VCU’s havok offense with a VCU loss, 57-62.

Liveblog: VCU vs. UNCW

Welcome to the first game of 2010. In what is truly the beginning of conference play, VCU host the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington. Both teams come in with a CAA record of 0-1, UNCW having their loss come from GMU. VCU looks to break a recent trend of losing their first contest of the New Year. Over the last five years, VCU has a record of 1-4. That all ends today, as VCU will look to pounce early and de-wing the Seahawks before they send them packing. LET’S GO V-C-U!!
