Slow start ruins Rams

VCU looked to mount a third BCS head on its wall after two nice wins over Wake Forest and UCLA, but ex Sunbelt and Metro conference rival South Florida (5-3) had other plans in mind and handed the Rams a tough 60-59 overtime loss.

The Bulls of the Big East streaked out to a 10-2 lead and eventually a game high 18 point advantage in the first half thanks to a slew of VCU bricks and defensive lapses. But the Rams battled back and eventually took a 1 point lead when Florida native Joey Rodriguez connected from long range with 46 seconds to play.

South Florida answered with and old fashioned 3-point play of it’s own, giving the Bulls a 2 point advantage just before another Floridian Ram, Ed Nixon, connected on a layup that would send the game into overtime.

There the Rams would be crippled by another slow start as USF started extra time with an 8-2 advantage before Jamie Skeen and Brandon Rozzell cut the lead to a single point, and put Bradford Burgess in a position to win it with seconds remaining.

Unfortunately for the Black-and-Gold Burgess’ drive couldn’t connect or draw the foul and the Rams needed to get out of Tampa with it’s fifth win of the season.

Jamie Skeen and Bradford Burgess carried the Rams through the night in VCU’s worst offensive output of this young season.

Skeen posted a game high 16 points, grabbed 6 boards, and blocked 2 shots in the losing effort.

Bradford Burgess notched his first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points to go with a game high 13 rebounds.

VCU’s Florida natives Ed Nixon and Joey Rodriguez may have enjoyed the hometown faces, but saw little success on the court combining for just 6 makes on 17 attempts for a 15 point joint effort.

The Rams usually reliable bench, which houses VCU’s leading scorer, Brandon Rozzell (16 pts/game), only added 13 points in the loss, 15 less than in VCU’s previous game, an 89-85 win over UCLA.

VCU moves to 4-2 on the season and gets a chance to take out their aggression on struggling William and Mary (3-4) this Saturday at noon at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

Sanders notches first NBA double-double, blocks 8 shots

Larry Sanders has a pretty sharp learning curve.

The rookie F/C for the Milwaukee Bucks, and highest ever drafted player out of VCU notched his first ever NBA double-double and blocked a RIDICULOUS 8 shots in his third ever start in the league.

Sanders has seen increased minutes due to injuries to Bucks’ big men Andrew Bogut and Drew Gooden, and tonight showed Bucks fans and Milwaukee brass what he is capable of doing with a little bit of time to figure things out.

Sanders 14 points, 10 rebounds and 8 blocks on the night are all career highs for the rookie.

Skeen Named CAA Co-Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – Some of the country’s best coaches, Bruce Pearl and Ben Howland, commented on the incredible balance that the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball team brings to each game and how it can be a nightmare to try and defend.

That balance has been on the forefront of the Rams early season success and it has been rewarded with a third straight Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week honor, this time for senior forward Jamie Skeen. The Charlotte, N.C. native earns his first weekly accolade and shares it with JMU big man Denzel Bowles.

“Jamie told me a few days before the Tennessee game that he wanted the ball more,” Head Coach Shaka Smart said. “So we said okay, we’ll get you the ball more. To whom much is given, much is expected, and he certainly produced this week.”

It is the first time in the at least the last 10 years of CAA history that three different players from same team won the weekly award in consecutive weeks. Joey Rodriguez (11/15) and Bradford Burgess (11/22) won the award in the two weeks prior.

Skeen was a force down low for the Black & Gold averaging 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds during the squad’s two games at the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden.

In VCU’s tough loss to 24th-ranked Tennessee, he recorded his second career double-double at VCU with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while knocking down 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.

His breakout offensive performance came in the third-place game against UCLA where he tallied a game-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting, along with nine rebounds and one block.

For his performance, Skeen was named to the All-Tournament Team, where he was joined by Reeves Nelson of UCLA, Mouphtaou Yarou of Villanova, Tobias Harris of Tennessee and the Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Scotty Hopson of Tennessee.

On the season, he is averaging 15.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks, while shooting 52.3 percent from the field.

Skeen and his teammates will return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to South Florida for a 7 p.m. showdown in the Sunshine State.

Larry Sanders gets first career start

VCU’s latest first round NBA draftee saw his first career start last night.

Larry Sanders posted 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting to go along with three rebounds and two blocks including a highlight worthy block that sent a weak Tyrus Thomas shot attempt into the stands.

Sanders has seen extended minutes with Bucks center Andrew Bogut nursing a sore back, and got the start after backup Drew Gooden was held out with a foot injury. Milwaukee’s 1st-round draft choice has averaged 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in just over 26 minutes per contest in these last three games.

Bogut and Gooden are both listed as day-to-day.

Sanders and the Bucks head to Utah this Monday for a road tilt against the Utah Jazz at 9PM.

It was an offensive version of the Rams first game in the Garden, except this time it was the opposition who couldn’t quite get over the hump.

VCU held off UCLA in an 89-85 battle for 3rd place in the NIT Season Tip-Off in Madison Square Garden.

The Rams threatened to blow out the legendary Pac-10 program with double digit leads in both halves, including an 11 point advantage with 7:08 to play that quickly disappeared after a 12-4 run by the Bruins.

A huge UCLA 3-pointer with 1:48 to play cut the lead to one, but as it was throughout the entire game, Jamie Skeen had an answer. Skeen’s bucket, two of his 23 points on the night to go along with 9 rebounds, followed by a huge Brandon Rozzell steal into a fast break jam stretched the lead to five with 1:03 to play.

The Bruins continued to attack the basket, but missed the threes needed to get over the hump and watched VCU ice the game at the line.

Joey Rodriguez, who struggled in VCU’s semi-final matchup against Tennessee, bounced back by hitting big shots when the Rams needed them most. Rodriguez had 14 on the night and was a hot 4-6 from downtown.

Not to be outdown by his point guard, Bradford Burgess chipped in 15 points of his own and was a perfect 3-3 from long range.

The Rams were able to apply their trademark pressure that has been so effective this season, scoring 24 points of 21 UCLA turnovers.

VCU played a deep bench lead by standout freshman Rob Brandenburg’s 9 points off the bench. Rams reserves outscored UCLA’s 28-8 with only 7 points from VCU’s leading scorer coming into today at 18.3/contest, Brandon Rozzell.

The Rams move to 4-1 on the season and will look to add their third victory over a BCS program when they head to Tampa to take on the Big East’s South Florida Bulls Dec. 1.

In a feisty effort against 24th ranked Tennessee, VCU fought hard but came up just short in their semifinal NIT tip-off matchup, losing their first game of the season, 77-72 on a rough 30% shooting night.

Bruce Pearl’s Volunteer squad threatened to blow this one open, but a solid road effort from senior Brandon Rozzell almost single handedly kept the Rams in the game, including a crucial 4-point play late in the game. Rozzell lead the Black-and-Gold with 23 points and 4 assists, and hit 6-of-11 shots from long range.

Jamie Skeen notched his first double double of this early hoops season, scoring 12 points to go along with 14 rebounds. But Skeen couldn’t get it done alone, as the Rams were dominated in the paint to the tune of an 11 rebound, 32 point disadvantage.

The Rams leading scorer and nation’s leading assist man, Joey Rodriguez, had his worst night of the season scoring just 5 points on 1-10 shooting before fouling out. Rodriguez headed to the locker room after cramping up in the first half and never quite recovered.

After Rodriguez hit a late VCU tre, as was the case most of the night, the Rams couldn’t quite turn that momentum into anything other than a brief glimmer of hope.

VCU will have to put the missed opportunity behind them quick, having just a day to enjoy the holidays before facing UCLA in the 3rd place game this Friday.

The Rams will get a chance to avenge their last NCAA tournament loss just two years ago against a Bruins squad that went down to 7th ranked Villanova 82-70, 2:30PM Friday on ESPN2. Both teams come into this game with 3-1 records.
