2013 PG JeQuan Lewis commits to VCU!

Shaka Smart and the VCU basketball program got some great news as JeQuan Lewis from Dickson County, Tennessee committed to the Rams yesterday. JeQuan was VCU’s #1 priority recruit at the point guard position and VCU’s coaching staff have been recruiting him for a long time going back to the July evaluation period where he played AAU with the Tennessee Tigers. He’s a talented 6’0 guard who will fit perfectly into VCU’s ‘Havoc’ style of play. He is extremely quick and has a very good mid-range game. Over the course of his recruitment several schools came in to see him including Georgia, Northern Iowa, Alabama, NC State, Wichita State, and Tennessee. It came down to UGA and VCU in the end.

Lewis is a 2-sport standout at Dickson County High as he is Dickson County’s quarterback on the football field in the fall. When he is quarterbacking Dickson County on the hardwood he’s averaging 17.3 ppg, 4.1 apg, and 3.9 steals per contest so far in this, his junior season. ESPN has him rated as the 8th-ranked player in Tennessee and gives him a grade of 89.  As one of the best on the ball defenders in Tennessee with excellent quickness and proficient in ball screen situations, he seems tailor-made to wreak havoc.

JeQuan was kind enough to give us a quick interview for VCURamNation following his commitment:

VCU Ram Nation: On behalf of the Ram Nation, congratulations on your commitment and we’re very excited that you have chosen to be a part of the future of VCU basketball.

You were pursued by many schools from many different levels, what made VCU the right fit for you in your mind?

JeQuan: There isn’t another coach in the world I would rather play for other than Coach Smart… I’m ready to wreak havoc!

VCU Ram Nation:  Over the course of your recruitment, which schools did you have offers from?

JeQuan: Georgia, Austin Peay, among other full rides.

VCU Ram Nation: Which NBA or college player would you say your game most resembles?

JeQuan: D-Rose. (Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls)

VCU Ram Nation: What do you think your greatest strength as a player is?

JeQuan: Getting to the rack and get my teammates open shots.

VCU Ram Nation: What role do you see yourself playing at VCU when you come in?

JeQuan: Strictly being a court leader!

VCU Ram Nation: When did you start hearing from the VCU staff about playing at VCU and who was the primary person in your recruitment?

JeQuan: Last summer and Will Wade.

VCU Ram Nation: What did you think of the fans and atmosphere at the Siegel Center when you visited? (JeQuan was in attendance when the Rams beat UAB on December 20th)

JeQuan: They get live! Great atmosphere!

VCU Ram Nation: Do you have any plans as to what you will be studying once you get to VCU?

JeQuan: Not sure yet.

VCU Ram Nation: Anything else you want to say to Ram fans?

JeQuan: It’s gonna be an exciting year. We’re gonna get after it! Straight chaos!

VCU Ram Nation: Thanks so much for your time JeQuan and we can’t wait to see you take the court for VCU!

VCU’s team effort handles Towson

It wasn’t even two weeks ago when the Rams were in Maryland to grab a 20 plus point victory over the Towson Tigers.  The only difference tonight was that VCU got the win at The Stu. 66-43

The Stu saw hometown favorite Senior Bradford Burgess have a hot game where he led all Rams in scoring with 22.  Burgess went 8-15on the night with 6-11 from behind the arc.

VCU’s bigs played a solid roll in the win.  Sophomore DJ Haley had an impressive outting with 25 minutes 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Sophomore Juvonte Reddic chipped in 4 points and 1 rebounds. Freshman Jarred Guest even saw 15 minutes of action.

Towson turned the ball over 28 times.  VCU was responsible for 19 steals from the Tigers. Towson managed to outrebound VCU 33 to 31.  VCU’s defense forced Towson to shoot just 41% on the night, 0-6 on threes.

Redshirt Freshman Reco McCarter saw some action with 3 points in his two minutes of play and Junior David Hinton dropped in 4 points for the total team effort.

VCU is now 21-5 over all and 12-2 in conference play and will travel to Norfolk on Saturday to play Old Dominion University.

Drexel rises to the top of latest CAA Bloggers Poll, Rams jump to second

There was a good bit of shuffling in this week’s CAA Bloggers Poll after previous top seed George Mason fell at Delaware.

The Dragons rose to first after a clean weekend that extended Drexel’s win streak to 11 games. VCU also leapfrogged GMU after extending their win streak to nine, and became the first CAA team to reach 20 wins this season.

Like the Patriots, Northeastern fell two spots in our latest poll after losing both of their games since last week’s rankings. The Huskies fell 61-53 at home against Drexel, and came up three points short at VCU in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicates.

Georgia State and Delaware were the beneficiaries of the Huskies rough week, GSU rising to fifth, Delaware to sixth after taking down George Mason.

Spots 8-12 remained the same in this week’s poll.

Jerry Beach of Hofstra blog Defiantly Dutch: ”Mason has been no. 1 in my poll for six weeks, though I thought the last couple weeks that Drexel was playing the best ball. But I always believe no. 1 has to be beaten in order to lose its spot. So, hence, Drexel, now that Mason has been beaten again. I think VCU is playing better than Mason but Mason hasn’t done enough to fall two spots. I usually use head-to-head as a tiebreaker for two closely matched teams, but Delaware has three wins over teams ahead of it in the standings and Northeastern has just one so I went with the Blue Hens.”

The voting panel is made up of CAA die-hard bloggers from around the league. This week’s list includes Michael Litos of CAAHoops.com and author of “Cinderella: Inside the Rise of Mid-Major College Basketball”, Brian Mull of Wilmington’s Star News Online, Ryan Kish of GMUHoops.com, Rob Russell of William & Mary’s Gheorghe: The Blog, Ben Moore of PantherTalk.com, Joseph Suhoski  of ODU blog VBR Productions,  Mike Brodsky who provides freelance coverage of Northeastern, Matthew Schlissel of TowsonTigers.com, Rob Abbott of JMUSportsBlog.com, Jerry Beach of the Hofstra blog Defiantly Dutch, Drexel freelancer Dan Crain and Mat Shelton of VCURamNation.com.

VCU hold back the Huskies, get Homecoming victory

VCU looked to extend their win streak to 9 as they hosted Northeastern as part of Homecoming weekend.  The two teams have split the regular season series over the past 12 meetings.

After a slow start the Rams got help from Junior Troy Daniels as he hit 3-5 from behind the arc to end the first half (5 for 10 on the night) as the Rams battled back for the 59-56 win over the Huskies.

The Rams regained the lead before the end of the first half and never gave it up for the entire seconds half despite the Huskies cutting the lead down to just three at the buzzer.  VCU’s defense played a big part in that getting 21 points off of 15 Northeastern turnovers.

Daniels led all Rams with 15 points on the night while Sophomore Juvonte Reddic added in 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Bradford Burgess remained quiet from the field pulling the trigger just 4 times connecting on two of them, contributing 6 points for VCU.

Tonights game marked a new school record for 15th consecutive sell out at The Stu.

The Rams move to a 20-5 record and will host Towson on February 8th.

Rams tomahawk chop the Tribe

VCU was a 14 point favorite in the Wednesday night meeting in Williamsburg.  Clearly, whoever set that didn’t see the last meeting in Richmond that saw the Rams win an overtime thriller.

The Rams weren’t looking for something as dramatic this go around and would beat the Tribe, 87-78 making it an 8 game win streak.

The Tribe cut the Rams lead down to as close as 7 points in the final minutes on a Quinn McDowell three pointer but that’s as close as they would get to the Rams.

VCU saw 4 players scoring in double digits.  Sophomore Juvonte lead all Rams in scoring with 20 points while Troy Daniels added 16, Treveon Graham dropped in 13.

VCU sophomore Rob Brandenberg continued to play himself out of his recent slump dropping 17 points and 3 assists.

Coach Smart’s Havoc style defense forced 12 turnovers from the Tribe, 9 of those coming off of steals by VCU.  The Rams kept William & Mary stand out Quinn McDowell to just 8 points off of shooting 2 for 7 on the night.

The Rams move onto a 19-5 record and return to The Stu on Saturday as they host Northeastern as part of Homecoming weekend.
