Coach Smart and the VCU Rams sure wish they could forget the first 34 minutes of their rematch against the Pirates of East Carolina on Tuesday night. Luckily, Coach Smart had the team prepared for the final run of the tightly contested game.

“Coach Smart has us playing 6 minute games at each practice” says Junior Guard Joey Rodriguez. The Rams have been working on finishing closely fought games and the work paid off Tuesday night as the Rams got revenge from last years loss to the Pirates in OT down in Greenville.

Former Highland Spring Teammates, Brandon Rozzell and Jamar Abrams turned VCU Ram/ECU Pirate (respectively) met up for the 2nd time, this being Jamar’s first trip back home to Richmond at the Stu. This also signaled former VCU Coach, current ECU coach, Mack McCarthy’s return to the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

Rams win 82-74.

After a tough first half in which the Rams trailed by 9, only having 20 points on the board, they received added energy in the second half with play from Senior T.J. Gwynn and Sophomore, Terrance Saintil.
This also marked Saintil’s first game back with the Rams since the beginning of the season after a thumb injury. The Rams scored 45 points in the second half, 9 of those coming from Junior guard Brandon Rozzell who hit three big 3 pointers in the 2nd half to help seal the win against the cross town rivals for the 6th year in a row.

The VCU Rams had a familiar face in the house in former VCU guard, now Utah Jazz guard, Eric Maynor but it couldn’t help them from keeping it close against the Rams of Rhode Island late in the game Wednesday night at the Stu.

The Rams got help from guard Brandon Rozzell with 17 points off the bench and 4 steals while forward Larry Sanders finished with 19 points and 11 boards to help give VCU the edge.

VCU’s trouble with free throws late in the 2nd half allowed Rhode Island to keep it close, almost hitting a 3 point shot at the buzzer to take the win.

VCU gets revenge at home against Nevada after a loss last season across the country. Larry Sanders gave everyone a scare going down in the 2nd half with muscle cramps but still had a great night with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks.

Ed Nixon helped the cause by adding a career high 17 points, perhaps no more important than a 3 point dagger within the final minute. VCU lead by as many as 20 points, but Nevada was able to close the lead in the later portion of the game behind former McDonald’s All-American, Luke Babbitt’s 27 points, 23 of which came in the second half.

Former VCU coach, current Oklahoma coach, Jeff Capel warned his Sooner squad about the intensity of the atmosphere at the Stu, but even he could not anticipate it Saturday night as Oklahoma was upset by the Rams, 82-69.

The occasion marked the first time ever that a ranked team has entered the building but the Rams wouldn’t allow OU to ever grab the lead.

Marist transfer, Jay Gavin made the most of his minutes scoring 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in 26 minutes of play. Larry Sanders played only 21 minutes on his 21st birthday, but scored 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting, blocked 3 shots, and added 4 assists.
