I'll miss UNCW. Too bad everything went downhill for them. I wouldn't have minded bringing the good version of UNCW to the A10. They always had some of the coolest fans. I wonder what UNCW will do once everything hits the fan here.
I totally disagree. Once the announcement is made, they ARE a lame duck. The CAA By-laws are clear on this point. They could be forbidden to compete for any CAA Championship. That kills recruiting. Nobody will want to play for a team that has no chance of going to the tournament. FOR THREE YEARS? That's what makes this seem a little far fetched to me. Three years of no chance to play for an auto-bid would kill their basketball program. I just can't understand them killing the horse that got them to the show. What I would see as possible is that the CAA negotiates with any team that wants to leave for the rights to participate and how the funds would be distributed during any transition period. Maybe you give a team the right to compete, with some change in the formula for how the money is handled. Sort of Pay to Play. You earn the money, they get to keep it. This could get interesting. With at least three teams getting ready to jump, the CAA could make a lot of money that will only be shared with those left behind.
Doc, I've been told it is a lot more. More like $30-40 million. Remember, facilities for all the new sports (not just Football), a lot of new coaches (for each program), etc. Travel for the bowling team... You get my point.
Everything I've seen on the matter says that their move would be effective for 2013, with football being the only exception, which is where the 2015 date comes from.
Rick, I am sure you are right. You just make may point stronger. It just isn't a few bucks to setup football (and maintain). While I, like many others, would like to spend my Fall Saturday afternoons following the Rams football, it is not in VCU's crystal ball. I am totally satisfied that basketball is king at VCU
I will say this, the core of CUSA, those schools staying, consist of IMO Marshall, UAB, ECU, Southern Miss and Tulsa. The core of the A10: Xavier, Dayton, Richmond, Butler (now), St. Louis, St Joes. MUCH better basketball is played in the A10. CUSA is a better baseball conference, but who cares. This is not a good move for ODU, who struggled to sell out on a regular basis against interstate rivals. North Texas, Rice, FIU, Marshall, Tulsa, Southern Miss or any other CUSA team isn't selling out Constant. Poor basketball move to say the least. I will say this, in light of the teams they invited, Georgia State maybe should have waited. CUSA > Sunbelt (even if barely).
anyone notice that DB had time to start a thread about this on monarch nation? DB is cheating on us lol. http://www.monarchnation.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5442
Everyone needs to keep in mind that CAA football is separate from the CAA in all other sports. It makes perfect sense for C-USA to invite ODU in all sports except football and then delay football membership until they have moved to FBS. It would also make perfect sense for ODU to play football as a CAA football only member until they are in a position to make the move to C-USA in football. The CAA currently has other football only members and there is nothing stopping the CAA from letting ODU be a football only member. It is not all or nothing. The CAA still needs football schools and it also buys them time to find a football replacement for ODU.
I saw that too and I am pretty sure DB has closed his account with VRN. Sometimes thats what you have to do when the temptation is too great to post. I really wish he was here this last week or so though.
You can also follow him on Twitter. He's posting there as much as he ever did on RamNation. Twitter will tell you as much, if not more, than he ever shared on RamNation. And you will see it on Twitter a lot sooner than anywhere else.
FYI, Wood Selig was on the Tony Mercurio show this afternoon and when asked about the C-USA stuff he said he couldn't comment on it. To me that's confirms this is real. I think you can access his show via I-tunes.
People in Richmond have a problem of thinking too small. We have over 50,000 alumni in this area and City Stadium is just sitting there. It cost ODU 25 million dollars to renovate a 20,000 seat stadium. All I want is for us to study it. What harm can be in studying how football will affect the University? In the world of college athletics, we will never be the school we want to be without college football. I am all for being a basketball first school but football will help us move up on the conference ladder. Without it, the highest conference we can ever achieve is the A10 and I for one feel VCU can be so much more than an A10 school
