ODU's first C-USA era recruit is unranked, unlisted 6'2 guard Jordan Baker from Hampton whose only offer came from ODU although 'Radford was on the verge'. You can't make this stuff up. http://www.dailypress.com/sports/hi...-baker-commits-to-odu-20120703,0,3796340.post
With coach Taylor, we are selling different things to recruits. Coach Smart has a F4 and great tempo of play to advertise. Coach Taylor is a system coach, where you are looking for the right "fit" for the program. Both syles have proven successful, but the upside for Smart's style is well-known. Please do not discount Baker, though, as he hit some huge shots in big games.....something an ODU PG has not done in recent years.
I'm sure the guy will end up being pretty good like most Taylor recruits. I'm sure he's hit some big shots, but playing next to one of the country's most coveted recruits in Anthony Barber and getting plenty of exposure with 'Radford on the verge' and ODU as the only D1 offer has to be a little unsettling. I was really just having some fun at the expense of the ODU fans who were claiming that the C-USA move would now open doors to 3 and 4 star recruits. It looks like more of the same from Taylor.
Who cares? Part of what makes VCU so great is the success of unheralded recruits. Eric Maynor, Larry Sanders, Dom Jones, BA Walker, Jesse Pellot Rosa (a walk on), Darius Theus (only offer from us), Jamal Shuler, Michael Anderson, Brandon Rozzell, Rob Brandenberg, DJ Haley, Teddy Okereafor, Treveon Graham and Briante Weber. What do all of these players have in common? 2-star recruits. 3 Star commits since 2005 include: Eric Whitehurst (never played here) TJ Gwynn (loved him, but was never more than a role player), Franck Ndongo (great guy, but didn't work out), Joey Rodriguez, Ed Nixon, Brad Burgess, Troy Daniels, Juvonte Reddic, Reco McCarter (we all know what happened here). My point is, we may all get excited about stars beside a name, but our staff is out there recruiting individuals who the believe can have an impact on this program, both athetically and academically. I don't give a damn how many stars a player has, if we're recruiting them there is a reason for it. ODU has made a living one signing under the radar guys who do the dirty stuff. They'll be fine and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the own CUSA once they begin play there, because in all honesty, who are they competing against?
