2012-13 Best of Ram Nation Awards

VCU forced 23 Butler turnovers in the 84-52 win.

I was on the way to “the office” (today’s venue: Harrison St. Cafe) when I picked up a copy of Style Weekly’s “Best of Richmond” Awards. The local weekly mag polls readers on their favorites in a number of categories, including best indoor or outdoor venue for watching a sports event, which, for some odd reason was won by the Diamond this year (seriously Richmond? You’ve been trying to get a new ballpark built for years), with the Siegel Center [...]

He averaged 8.9 ppg and a team-leading 6.5 rpg through the first 16 games before suffering a neck sprain in Charlottesville against UVA on [...]

Just when everyone thought Shaka Smart was done with the class of 2013, the staff received a commitment from 6’3, 165-pound guard Doug Brooks out of Lake Wales, Florida (hometown of 6-time NBA All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire). Brooks was in Richmond on his official visit this past weekend and decided to commit to VCU today. Brooks is a consensus 3-star guard on ESPN, Rivals, and Scout. ESPN Director of Scouting Dave Telep lists him #10 on the ‘top 10 under the radar [...]

For the third consecutive season VCU has advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament. The Rams did so by taking advantage of a perfect second round matchup against an Akron team that had recently suspended their senior point guard after a drug arrest, manhandling the Zips 88-42 last night. VCU will hope to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second time since 2011, but in their way stands a Michigan Wolverines team once ranked No.1 in the [...]

Game Preview: VCU v Akron

Shaka Smart will face mentor Keith Dambrot in VCU's Thursday NCAA tournament matchup.

Once again VCU finds themselves in a 12 v 5 matchup in the South Regional of the NCAA tournament, this time however as the 5 looking to avoid what’s been one of the most consistent first round seed upsets in tournament history–VCU upset 5th-seeded Wichita State just this past season playing as the 12 seed in Portland. The Rams will take on a familiar Akron Zips squad led by an even more familiar coach, Keith Dambrot, who just happens to [...]
