Ram Nation sits down with VCU Hall of Famer, Calvin Duncan

Ram Nation shared a sunday morning with VCU Hall of Famer, Pastor Calvin Duncan. Hear Calvin’s take on the Rams of the mid 80’s who were regulars in the NCAA and learn about Calvin’s decision to leave the NBA for a higher calling.

Matt has been reporting on VCU sports for Ram Nation since 2007 with a focus on news, photos, and feature stories.

My Pastor and inspiration. A wonderful interview.

Calvin taught me to be a "salt shaker" that day. What a wonderful person, and like Lisa said...and inspiration. Thank you Pastor Duncan for all that you do.
Pastor Duncan has been my mentor since I played ball at VCU 10 years ago and for the last 5 years he has been my pastor. He used to come speak to the girls basketball team ('98-'02) about the Bible and how it related to us as athletes and students. He and his wife are true models of what it means to truly care about people. They have such passion and enthusiasm for what God has done in their lives. Thanks for making me a better person, Pastor! And great job with the interview, Ram Nation! I look forward to keeping up with your future posts!

That's my Pastor!! A great man of valor! One with integrity, morals, standards and faith! Pastor, you have touched the lives of SO many people. I know personally that I have grown tremendously as a woman of God since I joined Faith & Family Church. You met me when I was broken and lost and you took me under your wing, nurtured me with the word & love of God. Now I can soar high above any circumstance or situation that I may encounter. You are the epitome of a Christian man and I am honored to be under your leadership. Continue walking in your calling and making a difference. The personal touch that you give everyone you come in contact with has an everlasting effect. The support, encouragement, text messages and how you challenge us to be better Christians and better people... It matters! You matter! Thank you for everything that you do for us. We love you!

I,m so proud to call him my pastor. I have learned so much and grown so much under Pastor Duncan. When I talk to people about the word today, they say you have really grown in the word and in your faith as a christian, and I say I owe it all to MY pastor. Salah!

Pastor Duncan is one of the greatest inspirational people in my life. Not only has he served as my Pastor in my adult life, but he was also my youth pastor and his walk with God has been consistent. I am so thankful to be a part of Faith and Family Church where he and his wife have taken every effort to establish a true church family. Thank you Pastor for your continued commitment and obedience to the work of Christ.

Pastor, What a great interview and inspiration. Since I have been going to FFC I have got closer to God.
What can I say but...what a might man of God!

I first met, the then Minister Calvin Duncan, who is now the awesome Pastor Calvin Duncan, at the Richmond Christian Center here in Richmond VA.

When I first met him I could see that God's hand was on his life and that he had a sincere passion for the Word of God and the people of God!

Pastor Duncan had touched the lives of so many people and I am certainly one of them!

The way he touched my life is through helping me discovery my ministry or my "purpose" in life.

I've always had a sincere love for health and fitness! I was also an athlete, a dancer/choreographer and fitness buff! I've always had a strong desire to teach others how to be healthy and fit and I saw that with aerobics and dance!

To make a long story short, he encouraged me to seek after that passion and he gave me my firt opportunity to teach aerobics at the Lord's Gym at the Richmond Christian Center.

Since then I have started my own company, Bodi E Lee Fitness and I have cut my first fitness DVD called "Bodi Camp Beginnings". All of this happended because Pastor Calvin Duncan told me that the gift of health and wellness was in me and that he believed in me!!!

Today, my family and I are a part of the FFC Family and are very active in the ministry. We are constantly blessed by his ministry and we truly feel like we are members of his family!

I can go on and on about how he is a wonderful man of God and how deep and wide his love and compassion is for God and the people of God, but there is not enough space on this blog:-)

Anyway,I am so, glad he decided not to go with the Bulls, but come unto to lambs!!!

Love and Blessings, Father

Your Spiritual Daughter

That's my "impact" Pastor. :-) He is definitely significant in my life. I love him and our first Lady, Lady Barbara Duncan so very much. Moreover, they have very loving children who are just as supportive as they are. The Duncan family is a prime example of a Godly family. Faith and Family Church and it's members have saved my life and taught me how to strive for excellence no matter what. Pastor Duncan, Lady Duncan, Chelsea, Richard, and Azelle you guys are AWESOME!

WOW Pastor! It's in YOU. My Pastor is so awesome. I am honored to have such an authentic man and woman of God to model after. Who would have thought that God could've worked all this out for my family to be blessed by the Duncan's and Faith and Family Church. We take great pride to say where we fellowship. Thank you Jesus that the annointing flows from the head. We look forward to the continued journey with our church family.

Pastor Duncan is one of the few people I know in this day and time who lives what he preaches. He and his wife are REAL. He does not seek after fame, fortune, and material things, which is evidenced by his decision to quit the NBA for a higher calling. He truly loves God and therefore loves people. My family has changed for the better since becoming members of his church. Inspirational video!

A real man on a mission. I look forward to gifting him with a check for $1000.00 towards his vision of a new sanctuary.
Pastor Calvin has had a great desire to help and mentor people ever since I knew him. He helped me get my life together (at the age of 13) way back in the 1970s. If it wasn't for his great concern for me, I surely would have been another statistic of an inner-city male who went down the wrong path. I love you brother and keep doin' great things!

Pastor Duncan is a great teacher. His passion for the Word is
infectious. I know this because I have been a member of Faith and
Family for over 3 years now.

I look forward to Sunday worship and Bible Study. If I miss either
service during the week, I feel inadequate.

Our praise and worship is awesome. I come to worship
expecting and I leave filled up.

Pastor Duncan teaches us how to live in this world and tackle
life's problems,God's Way.

My motto now is:

Everthing I do is an act of worship!!!

I just started attending Faith and Family and I have to say that it has been a wonderful experience. After visiting several area churches it was this Husband and Wife team that made the biggest impact on me and my family. If you are out there and have become disillusioned with the whole Church experience please come and listen to the blessed man of God. He will rock you and shake you loose.

Well, I first heard of Pastor Duncan from a men's group I was at. At that gathering, he touched me a lot. Consequently, I decided I had to figure out who this man of God was. I then went on the computer to search for the church and that is when I found out about Faith and Family. I then sent an email to Pastor Duncan and then that is how I found out that he was teaching a single's and engaged class at the church on Monday nights. At these classes, I had a chance to get to know Pastor Duncan a little more. I was even able to talk to him about a few things on my mind. He was humble and there to listen. After that, my fiancee and I decided to visit the church a few times. It was during these times that I felt the love of God from the church. I can honestly say that on the Sunday's we visited, both my fiancee and I left church feeling revived as if a weight was lifted off us. The sermons pastor preached were not only interesting, but he also appealed to everyday life situations. Soon after, my financee and I decided to join. Ever since I joined, I feel better about myself. I have learned so much from this man of God. I realy look up to him a lot becasue he lives what he preaches and that is important to me. I encourage anyone who is looking for a church home to visit this awesome church. God is truly in control and is doing great things there. My fiancee and I look forward to contributing to the ministries and growing with the church as time goes on.

WOW...Pastor D, you are an awesome man of God. I can't thank you enough for the influence that you have had on my life and the life of my family.

I could go on and on about what God has done to use you in our lives but I will just simply say "thank you".

As Chris and I watched the video, we both teared up. As former athletes, we know how hard it can be to "do the right thing" when everyone seems to be doing what pleases the flesh. What stood out to us in this video was your words on character and what prompted you to leave the NBA..... I am so proud to be under your leadership. God could not have placed my family in a better place. You and First Lady have set a standard that we all aim to follow. Again, thanks for being you and loving God....

Hello all!! To God be the glory! Recently, my fiancee David Robinson and I joined Faith and Family church. I am overjoyed to not only be apart of such a great congregation, but also to have a pastor like Pastor Duncan. From the first moment I met him and his wife, it was undeniable that the spirit of God was covering them. Thier heart for God and for people is terrible. In today's world, it is so easy to find pastors who do not live Christians lives or pastors who are not in that position for the right reason. Pastor Duncan does his best to love others in the way God has called him. He has a heart to see all individuals be prosperous in the Lord and in life. This is truly a blessing! If you are looking for a church home or are searching for "the right way"... if you are going through some difficult problems in life and need someone to talk to.. I encourage you to visit Faith and Family church. I am sure you will experience a blessing.

Not only is the Word excellent, but the praise and worship is all inclusive and powerful. Thank God for this church, our Pastor, and our church family. Living in faith, building Godly families, and consumate balanced people doing good works in the community. Jeanette

I am so appreciative of the fact that Pastor Duncan made that decision to be significant and not just successful! If it weren't for my Pastor, First Lady, and the rest of Faith and Family Church I don't know where I would be......probably still lost, hurt, and confused. Pastor is not only a source of inspiration but my spiritual FATHER and covering!! I am sure he didn't know then that by choosing God first and deciding to be significant he would also be successful!! For as long as I have known Pastor Duncan, he has been a man of integrity and a lover of Jesus Christ. His walk with Christ has been consistent, passionate, and it shows in everything that he does. People who are "seeking something" are drawn to him and after hearing him and getting to know him realize that they are seeking a relationship with Jesus Christ. I believe that is why FFC has and continues to have tremendous growth over the past 5 years. I am truly proud to call him my pastor, friend, and cousin.

This is a wonderful video. I have known Calvin Duncan for some time as he come into my store frequently and I have to say that this interview is right on point. Calvin is a man of conviction, decency and respect for all people. If more people followed Calvin's approach the world would be a far better place. And as a person who used to go to the Coliseum to watch him rain that sweet jumper all over the court, he was a decent basketball player too. But what I have to say is my favorite part of this segment is to see him speak about the person he wanted to be and how he looks to teach respect and a good sense of values for the community. Calvin is just as successful as some of the wealthiest athletes in the world, but his success is greater because of the person he is and the message he conveys to others.

Awesome Video. Pastor Duncan is a great man of God! He is also a very REAL person. What you see is what you get. It is truly an honor to serve with such a great man of God. More importantly, he takes his role as a Pastor very serious. He leads and lives by the word of God. His messages of discipleship and having a genuine concern for the people is what attracts those who are tired of playing games, but seek a true relationship with Christ. This was a great forum and video and I pray that those of you out there that are not memebers of Faith and Family Church pay a visit for yourselves, and more importantly, develop your own relationship with Christ.

I am so proud to say that this wonderful man is my Pastor. I came to FFC a few months ago looking for a church home and found it in ONE visit. Pastor Duncan is an inpiration to many and has a humble spirit that allows you to be drawn to him as he teaches the word. Pastor and Lady Duncan have such a wonderful relationship with the FFC family. Their ability to remember faces and names is truly a God given gift. This interview exposes the "real" Calvin Duncan. The heart of the man shines through and it is real. Pastor Duncan is not only talented on and off the court; he is anointed and lives each day to be an example to others. I am proud to call him my pastor and my friend and am thankful for his influence in my life. This man understands true success and true opportunity and is so secure in his leadership that he takes pleasure in raising up others to their destiny and purpose. If you think he moves well on the court - you should see him on Sunday mornings!! Way to go, Pastor D!

An earthly "David". Pastor Duncan, a man after God's heart!!! Words can't really describe this Mighty Man of God! He is raw and yet real. He is compassionate and sincere about Christianity and people giving their lives to Jesus Christ. He constantly encourages people to be the best that they can be and he has no favorites in his congregation. He will call you out when necessary and he is serious about his flock being true lovers of servant hood and having relationship with God. He is the Ultimate Housekeeper-no mess, no clicks, no mistreating of his people. He is true to our mission of living by faith and building Godly families and he and his wife, Mrs. Duncan, are a great example of what a great marriage can be. What you see in the video doesn't compare to seeing and hearing Pastor Duncan in person. He is so pumped and energized for God that you never want to miss a Worship service or Bible Study. Pastor Duncan and his wife are the epitome of how the head of the church should be run. What I really like about him, is that he is radical for JESUS CHRIST!!! He goes all out; hard for GOD and I love it! God Bless you Pastor and keep on delivering the Word and delivering souls as only you can!!!

Then the lord said to Noah “Come into the Ark you and all your household, because I have seen you are righteous before me in this generation” Gen. 7:1

I thank God for you Pastor Duncan! You are a righteous man of integrity who is courageous enough to obey God even when it means standing alone. As long as I’ve known you, you have been a stand out, above the crowd, go for God guy! Like Noah, you lead by example; you consistently choose to please God over man, and self. You and First Lady Barbara Duncan selflessly lead Faith and Family Church into real relationship with Jesus. Your transparent love and commitment for God and each other is producing a church of like families, real people serving a real God. We love on purpose at FFC, and truly enjoy our time together as a church family.
I salute you Pastor Duncan, and thank God for your leadership. You inspire and teach us with great compassion, confidence and conviction. I always appreciate your willingness to stay connected with people. I am sooo proud of you  Hold steadfast to what you know is true ….. the living Word of God. Pastor Calvin Duncan is such a tremendous blessing to me, my family and to countless others. Pastor Duncan often says "SUCCESSFUL people add value to themselves, but SIGNIFICANT people add value to others." Pastor Duncan, you are one of those "significant" people who reaches out to help others realize they are significant and help them reach their God-given potential.

Pastor Duncan sees GREATNESS inside every person he meets and will make sure you know it. He truly exemplifies tremendous Christ-like characteristics. One in particular is that of genuine love -- the kind of love that comes from his FATHER GOD WHO IS LOVE. He loves people.

Thank you Pastor Duncan for being a chosen vessel of God who is telling everybody about Somebody who can save anybody. That Somebody is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Former b-ball great becomes a "God pleaser". Awesome is a word that describes my pastor. He loves God's people and he is always trying to build people up and bring them closer to God. Like King David's "cave of Adullum" (check out 1 Samuel 22: 1-2), Faith and Family Church has become a place of safety and healing for people who are in need. Pastor Duncan,

I enjoyed listning to your interview. You have a great memory regarding names and places from your college days, as well as your professional era. Thank you for allowing The Lord Our GOD to direct your foot path. I believe in doing so, you're still playing ball, leading sheep to the Free Throw Line (getting reborn again, baptized, and supplying manna (GODs word), keeping our eyes on the ball (staying focus on the things of GOD), and making the shot
(holding on until JESUS comes / the next resurrection.)

A man of integrity, fortitude, and passion is the shadow that follows Calvin Duncan. His selfless stance of giving up basketball for the Lord is priceless. I know God interprets his tears and his cry for His people. Calvin desires that people would grow spiritually and have their own relationship with the Lord. As founder of Faith and Family Church, God has graced him to "not have church as usual,” but to have a body of people growing in righteousness. He has never met a stranger and he has the tenacity to reach nations. By taking the road less traveled, he is a living legacy.

Pastor is someone who is significant because he truely cares for others and is always willing to help others to be the best they can be without a second thought. Pastor Duncan you are a man of integrity who want to tell everyone about the living God that we serve. Basketball was just a stepping stone to get you to the place were you are now. Your passion for the game showed then and your passion for Christ shows now. Anyone that looks at the interview has to think about the choices they made and still have to make in life. Continue to be a fisher of men, and may God continue to bless you in all that you do.

When I here people talk about Calvin Duncan I here words like:
Integrity, Fortitude, Righteous, Courageous, Significant,
Tremendous, Awesome, Aware, GOD Pleaser, Inspiration, Conviction,
Professional, Believer, "Fisher of Men" and a man that Doesn't
settle. To me, all these words barely scratch the surface of
who I know to be Calvin Duncan going on about 11 years now.
this man of GOD is street savvy and he doesn't just talk the talk,
he "is", walking the walk. I (TRUST) him, Love, him, he is a
true Friend and you can count on getting it straight-"uncut" !!!He's a great source of information and most importantly,
he "LOVES GOD" knows and (LIVES) his word. He has been and continues
to be a Blessing to me and my wife. E. F. Hutton’s got nothing on

Great interview of a great man. I say man and not Pastor because long before he was a Pastor he was faithful to God and always had a heart of love and compassion for people. Pastor Duncan encouraged and prayed for me while I was student, provided counseling to me as I was preparing for marriage and has been there for me in the midst of many challenges. His decision to leave the NBA and follow God's calling still astounds me, and I know that there are many blessings that have come and will come from that sincere decision. God will certainly continue to elevate this man of integrity. God Bless you Pastor.

Pastor Duncan is a true man of God, living and doing what God has called him to do at all times. Since joining FFC I have watched your zeal for God, seen your overwhelming compassion for God's people, and your dedication has inspired me to continue to grow in the word and the things of God. I'm so greatful that God lead our family from Los Angeles California to you and our FFC family. Thank you for being our Pastor but most of all thank you for being my friend.

Pastor Calvin Duncan is an awesome man of God! I am so glad to read this interview and share a comment here about the Man and the Pastor. It is amazing to know him and experience his energy and enthusiasm for helping others to be BETTER people and show their love for the Lord Jesus and for one another. Pastor Duncan is a person of great integrity, AND he is not afraid to tell people who the source of his strength and energy is... JESUS. He is transparent in all his ways. He raises up a standard for all men and women to be proud to follow! I am so glad he is my pastor and ever present friend in times of need. You really have to experience his energy for yourself! (7900 Walmsley Blvd, Richmond, VA. 23235 at 8, 10 and Noon every Sunday) May God always protect him and his wonderful family!

Great interview, Calvin and I came to VCU in 1981. Unlike Calvin I went to Jr College instead of Prep School so I came in as a jr and Calvin as a freshman. I believe that recruiting class was the best in school history. 81-82 returned seniors Monty Knight and Kenny Stancel who previously were All Sunbelt Conference performers. We only won 18 or 19 games and did not get invited to the NCAA Tournament. In 82-83 Calvin and I became All Sunbelt Conference and All Virginia performers with Calvin being named co player of the year. We started 1 senior, 3 sophmores and 1 freshman. We had the 2nd longest winning streak in the nation behind the University of Houston & received a buy to the NCAAs. We lost the game to go to the sweet sixteen to the University of Georgia by 1 point who went to the final four. Calvin and I shared many awards and honors in 82-83 and was considered the 1, 2 punch but our teammates were just as valuable. 81-85 featured 6 players drafted to the NBA. Kenny Stancel, Monty Knight, Fred Brown, Calvin Duncan, Mike Schlegel and Rolando Lamb. 4 of the 82-83 starters were drafted though 3 of them were in 85 thats an example of the depth we had. At that time (1985) VCU had 17 players drafted to the NBA. Today (2010) VCU has 19. We were a mid major with major talent on the rise in the early 80s. I can only imagine if I went to prep school and had 2 more years to play with Calvin. Calvin God Bless you are one of Gods soldiers and will always be my brother. Call me!
