VCU road a 4-game win streak into tonight’s rematch against Georgia State and looked to avoid the season sweep by taking out a GSU team that handed the Black-and-Gold their only loss in the history of the rivalry just weeks ago.
VCU did just that by scoring on their first possession and going on a 71-54 run that lasted all of 40 minutes.
Like his injured mentor, freshman Rob Brandenberg came off the bench to lead the Rams with 23 points on the evening, 16 of which came in the first half…just 2 shy of GSU’s team total.
VCU’s stifling defense frustrated the Panthers early and often, as GSU turned the ball over 24 times on the evening and saw Eric Buckner held to 6 points, all of which came from the free throw line. Buckner dropped 28 on the Rams, a career high in their previous meeting.
Jamie Skeen posted just over his average by contributing 15 points for the Rams and grabbed a team high 7 rebounds.
Sophomore Troy Daniels rounded out the list of double digit scorers for VCU, hitting 3-of-7 three point attempts to go along with his one free throw on the evening.
The win moves VCU to 14-5 on the season, but perhaps more importantly 6-1 in conference play, good for a share of 1st place with the Pride of Hofstra.
VCU will hope to keep their win streak alive in the always tricky road trip to Norfolk to face rival Old Dominion this Saturday.
ODU sits a game behind VCU along with two other teams heading into this weekend’s action.
