The CAA Finals matched up two of the hottest teams in the nation on ESPN Monday night. Both VCU and Drexel combine for a 33-1 record since January 12th but it was the Rams that would get the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the 59-56 win.
VCU got the start that they were looking for against the #1 Drexel Dragons. Drexel turned the ball over 12 times in the first half (18 on the night) compared to VCU’s 5 in the first. Junior Darius Theus was responsible for 3 of those turnovers in the first and led the Rams at the break with 10 points and led all Rams in scoring with 16 on the night.
The Rams didn’t shoot the lights out in the first like they did against George Mason on Sunday but they did shoot 44% to Drexel’s 26% before the break and ended with just 41% on the night.
Poor free throw shooting towards the end really allowed Drexel to continue to stay within reach cutting the Rams lead to just 1 point in the final few minutes. The Rams shot 71% from the line going 15-21.
Theus was named CAA Tournament MVP. Sophomore Rob Brandenberg and Senior Bradford Burgess was named to the CAA ALl Tournament team.
