Ram fans were eager to get Coach Smart’s 4th season underway at the Stu Friday night. They would welcome for the first time ever, Florida Gulf Coast University from the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Rams were actually less than welcoming, beating the Eagles 80 to 57.
The Eagles gave VCU fits early with their zone defense. It took the Rams the first ten minutes before they could make their first run that saw a barrage of threes from Senior Troy Daniels, Sophomore Teddy Okereafor and Senior Darius Theus.
Sophomore Treveon Graham led all Rams in scoring with 15 points. Junior Juvonte Reddic put in a good night on the glass, grabbing 9 rebounds for the Rams while Graham helped the cause with 7 boards.
Sophomore Briante Weber set an all time VCU record with 10 steals on the night. His 13 points on the night gave him a double-double to start off the season.
Freshman Melvin Johnson showed promising signs for Ram fans on his first official game on The Stu chipping in for 9 points in his debut.
Both teams shot similar field goal percentage but the Rams took almost twice as many shots as FGCU, 73 to 44.
The Rams totally outmatched the Eagles in almost every category. VCU forced 25 turnovers for 33 points. FGCU was only able to get 14 turnovers from the Rams turning that into just 15 points. The Black and gold out rebounded FGCU 43 to 29 and VCU’s bench poured in 36 points to FGCU’s 10.
VCU’s next game will be a rematch of the 2nd round of last years NCAA Tournament as they host Wichita State, November 13th at 7pm.
