The Rams didn’t make it to Final 4 weekend this year, but that isn’t stopping Troy Daniels from competing during the weekend’s festivities. The senior was selected to compete in Thursday night’s Hampton Hotels Men’s 3-Point Championship held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Daniels set a VCU single-season record with his 124 makes as a senior, as well as a single-game record 11 threes in the Rams’ blowout of ETSU earlier this season. He ranks No.2 all-time at VCU in made 3-pointers.

Daniels will compete against Florida Gulf Coast’s Sherwood Brown, Murray State’s Isaiah Canaan, Belmont’s Ian Clark, Iowa State’s Tyrus McGee, Indiana’s Jordan Hulls, Kansas State’s Rodney McGruder and North Carolina State’s Scott Wood. He leads the group in makes per game for the season at 3.44 per contest. Tryus McGee may be the favorite however. The senior sharpshooter led the country in 3-point field goal percentage, hitting 46.4% of his 207 attempts.

Daniels is the second player in as many years to compete in the shootout, but will look to advance beyond the first round, something 2011 grad, Bradford Burgess, was unable to pull off after a first round miscount kept him from advancing.

Burgess saw the clock run off 3.4 seconds before the announcer gave the signal to begin shooting, then when the clock ran out, was credited with 12 points instead of his made 13 points that would have advanced him to the second round.

Daniels may need to have a second counter on hand to make sure he doesn’t get the Burgess treatment.

The event will air on ESPN at 7PM Thursday, April 4th.
