Troy Daniels signs free agent deal with NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats

One of Shaka Smart’s first recruits as a head coach also became his first recruited prospect to become a NBA player early this morning. Troy Daniels went undrafted in last night’s NBA Draft, but that was not unexpected.

Great news came early this morning from league sources that Troy Daniels has reached a free agent agreement with the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats! Contract terms have not been disclosed at this time.

Besides being not too away from Richmond for Ram fans to root on ‘Buzz’, the Bobcats organization is a great fit for Troy in that they were the 4th-worst 3-point shooting team in the NBA last year. Troy’s specialty is an area of need for Charlotte. Troy set VCU records for 3’s in a season (124) and game (11) last season while shooting 40.3% from behind the arc. He finished 2nd all-time at VCU with 251 three-pointers for his career. He was also the NCAA Final Four CollegeSlam 3-Point Shooting Contest Champion this past spring beating out some of the most accomplished shooters in the country.

Another reason the Bobcats could be a good fit is that Charlotte’s starting SG Gerald Henderson Jr. (son of former VCU and Boston Celtics great Gerald Henderson Sr.) is also a restricted free agent and there is no guarantee that he will be back with the Bobcats next season. There should be an opportunity for Troy to earn minutes with Charlotte.

Troy Daniels joins Eric Maynor (20th overall, 2009 Draft, Portland Trailblazers) and Larry Sanders (15th overall, 2010 Draft, Milwaukee Bucks) as recent VCU players who have moved on to the NBA. Rising senior Juvonte Reddic is also listed on most mock drafts as being a high to mid second round pick in 2014 as well!

Congratulations to Troy ‘Buzz’ Daniels as he embarks on his career in the NBA and best wishes from all the fans of Ram Nation! LET’S GO VCU!
