VCU knew they were in for a battle when the Toledo Rockets flew into town and it was a battle they got.
The black and gold traded baskets with the Rockets in the first half but headed to the lockers trailing 45-42, in danger of seeing their 20-game home winning streak snapped. But Briante Weber in his return simply wouldn’t have it, and propelled the Rams to a tough 87-78 win, posting an unreal 18-point, 8-rebound, 7-assist, 9-steal finish.
Weber’s senior partner in crime, Treveon Graham, matched Melvin Johnson’s game-high 22 points and the Rams were able to withstand a Toledo team that hit 50% of their shots on the evening, 44.4% as a team from distance.
Bri’s nine steals were a part of a 21-turnover night for the Rockets that proved to be too much to overcome against a VCU team in front of a rowdy Siegel Center crowd.
Jordan Burgess posted 11 points of his own on a night that was dominated by VCU’s starters. The Rams usually deep bench was held to just 12 points.
The win moves VCU to 2-0 heading into a Thursday night matchup against the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore who will be playing their second game in as many days after taking on former VCU assistant, Jamion Christian, and his Mount St. Mary’s squad on Wednesday night. Game tips at 7PM.
