After a grueling double overtime win on Saturday against University of Northern Iowa, the Rams were back at the Stu Tuesday night to host Belmont University. Belmont, who entered the match up 7-3 and on top of the Ohio Valley Conference, would get outplayed at both ends of the court as the Rams win 78-51.

Sophomore JeQuan Lewis got the Rams going offensively taking more than half of VCU’s shots in the first five minutes. Lewis’ early defensive efforts also helped VCU’s cause and allowed them to take an early 16-7 lead ten minutes in. It was all VCU from there on out.

The sold out crowd witnessed VCU’s defense in top form. Belmont had to earn every single shot they took. The Rams held the Bruins to shooting just 36% from the field on the night. Turnover’s were also key in the win. Belmont turned the ball over 17 times, allowing VCU to convert those into 21 points in the win.

It was a good night offensively for VCU with even scoring. Freshman Justin Tillman would lead all scores with 16 points and went 7 from 8 from the field. Lewis would be next with 13. It wasn’t so much VCU’s offense as it was Belmont’s inability to score.

Senior Treveon Graham would be the only upperclass to score more than 5 points on the night as he would chip in 11.

VCU’s bench proved to be huge as they outscored Belmont’s bench 56 to 14. The Rams did a fair amount of damage in the paint. That’s where 44 of their points came. The game on the glass was fairly even until 10 minutes left where VCU just took over, out rebounding the Bruins 38 to 29 on the night.

The win moves VCU to 7-3 on the season and will travel to Ohio to play Cincinnati on December 20th at 12pm on ESPNU.
