Cleveland State fought hard but the Rams had just too much tonight, downing the Vikings 72-63 to win their fifth consecutive game to wrap up their non-conference schedule at 10-3.
The Rams jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first 12 points of the game before Cleveland State was able to make a dent on the scoreboard. Credit to the Vikings, they did not throw in the towel after the first four and a half minutes, choosing to instead finish out the game and actually cut the Rams lead to five heading into the half.
VCU opened the second on an 11-3 run and were able to extend their lead to a comfortable 18 that proved too much for the Horizon league team to overcome.
Treveon Graham paced the Rams with a game-high 20 points in the win. Graham added a game-high nine rebounds and was 7-11 from the field in the win.
Freshman Terry Larrier (13) and JeQuan Lewis (11) were the only other Rams to finish with double-digit scoring in the win.
Briante Weber posted six points in his 28 minutes of play on his birthday night. Weber led all players with six assists and added four rebounds, two blocks and a steal in the win.
VCU head to the Bronx next to take on Fordham in the Rams Atlantic 10 conference opener this Sunday. The Fordham Rams are 4-6 this season but have two homes losses already this season, one to a Maryland Eastern Shore team VCU beat by 40, the other to the River Hawks of UMass Lowell.
