Doughty to redshirt 2015-16 season after NCAA declares freshman partially ineligible

22261310710_d2c8f7f0fe_bWord on freshman Samir Doughty’s eligibility issues came via VCU Athletics today. Below is the official release.

“VCU Athletics announced today that men’s basketball freshman Samir Doughty received clarification on his initial eligibility from the NCAA Eligibility Center. Doughty will redshirt the 2015-16 season as a partial qualifier but will receive his athletics grant-in-aid.

He is eligible to practice with the team in the second semester this season. Doughty will have four years of eligibility for competition after the 2015-16 season.

“We received a late notice from the NCAA Eligibility Center regarding a change to Samir’s initial eligibility last week,” VCU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Will Wade said. “This change involved circumstances outside of Samir’s control. We worked closely with the NCAA and we are thrilled that Samir will remain with our men’s basketball program. He has excelled so far academically at VCU and he will continue to represent our program well in the classroom.”

Due to Family Educational and Rights Privacy Act laws, VCU will not release any further details regarding Doughty.”

Doughty suited up for VCU’s Black & Gold game but was absent in VCU’s recent exhibition win over Cal U due to a late flagging by the NCAA.

The Philadelphia native scored 11 points and grabbed five steals for the Gold team in VCU’s Black v Gold scrimmage this October and came to the Rams as a big-time scorer, averaging 24.9 points as a high school senior.
