Strong first half propels Rams to win in regular season opener
VCU built a 22-point first half lead they were able to ride out in tonight’s 75-50 win against the Panther’s of Prairie View A&M.
The Rams hit over 56% of their first half shots including 5-10 from long range while holding Prairie View to just 25%, giving the black and gold an advantage that buried the SWAC opponent early and proved to much to overcome late.
Guards Melvin Johnson and Doug Brooks led the Rams with 13 points each in the win, a balanced effort for the Rams that saw nine players score and only three hit double-digits.
Sophomore Justin Tillman was the other player to post double-digit scoring and led all players with 11 rebounds to give the Detroit native his first double-double of the season. Tillman added two blocks, two steals and an assist in the win.
JeQuan Lewis dished out a game-high seven assists for the Rams and finished with eight points and three steals in his 25 minutes of action. Fellow junior Mo Alie-Cox added eight points as well and chipped in a game-high four blocks.
The Rams proved havoc still lives here by forcing 22 turnovers in the win, scoring 33 points of those turnovers and finished with 18 fast break points.
The win moves VCU to 1-0 heading to start the season heading into a Monday night 2K Classsic tip against the Highlanders of Radford University led by former VCU assistant, Mike Jones.
