After a convincing win on Sunday over Liberty, VCU was back in action on Tuesday night as they hosted North Florida. This match up would see Coach Will Wade face off against one of his best friends, North Florida Coach, Matt Driscoll. Fortunately, Coach Wade gets the bragging rights on this one as the Rams went onto win, 80-68.
It was a sluggish start for VCU as the shots just wouldn’t drop in the first half. The Rams shot just 14 of 38 from the field in the first half. Their defense would keep them neck and neck before VCU would go on a 20-5 run after ten minutes in to take a 6 point lead and end the half up by 8, 39-31.
Senior Melvin Johnson would just barely edge out Senior Korey Billbury as the leading scorer on the night, 23-22 respectively. Junior Mo Alie-Cox would also prove to be big tonight scoring 19 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Junior Jordan Burgess would grab 9 rebounds.
Junior Jequan Lewis would also play a large part in getting his teammates going. Lewis would contribute with 10 assists.
There was quite the contrast when it comes to turnovers. North Florida would turn the ball over 17 times on the night to VCU’s 7, allowing VCU to convert that into 16 points.
The Ospreys are picked to finish first in the Atlantic Sun conference and are a top 5 team nationally from behind the arc but tonight, VCU’s defense made them look pedestrian, making just 5 of 18 three pointers, half of their average, 12.9 threes a game.
VCU moves to 8-5 on the season. VCU will kick off conference play on Saturday, January 2nd as they host George Mason University at 5pm.
