Recap: VCU survives against Middle Tennessee, 62-56
Coming off a win over rival, Old Dominion, on Saturday, VCU traveled to Murfreesboro, Tennessee to take on Conference USA member, Middle Tennessee State University. It may have been the ugliest win of the year for the Rams but a win nonetheless, 62-56.
VCU and MTSU would exchange leads just four times in the first half but it felt like more as they were neck and neck. Junior JeQuan Lewis would go on a 5-0 run to extend the Rams lead to 4 points, 26-22 with 3:42 left in the first half. VCU would go into halftime up by just 2.
The start of the second half would see the momentum swing MTSU’s way early and it would also see Junior Mo Alie-Cox pick up his 3rd foul just 3 minutes into the second half.
MTSU Junior Reggie Upshaw Jr. would explode for the Blue Raiders with several confidence building dunks that just seem to come one after the other. Upshaw would end with 15 points and 12 rebounds on the night for MTSU.
After a tense back and forth for several minutes which saw a handful of ugly shots from both teams, it would be a three from the corner from Senior Korey Billbury that would extend VCU’s lead to 5, 57-52 with 1:46 left to play that would eventually sink MTSU. Billbury’s play would be huge in the final minutes. He would chip in 11 points and 7 rebounds on the night.
It was Senior Melvin Johnson once again who would lead the Rams in scoring with 19 points. Johnson would shoot 6 of 18 on the night and 4 of 12 from 3 point land.
VCU will travel to Atlanta to play Florida State on Sunday, December 6th at 2pm.
