VCU looked to extend their 9 game win streak to 10 as they hosted St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon. The Bonnies would not make it easy for the Rams though as Coach Wade needed almost all 40 minutes to get the win over the team from upstate New York, 84-76.
In a game that took some patience, the Bonnies didn’t hit their first field goal until 5:45 into the game. Lucky for them, VCU only had 7 points at the time. VCU was off to another slow start as they would go 5 of 16 from the field in the first ten minutes. The Rams would end the night shooting 44.8%, going 30 of 67 from the field.
St. Bonaventure would lead the Rams by just 1 at halftime and would extend their lead to start the second half. St. Bonaventure Junior Marcus Posely would light it up for the Bonnies, scoring 30 points on the night.
For the Rams, once again, Junior JeQuan Lewis would lead the Rams offensively with 26 points, 7 assists and 0 turnovers on the evening. Next up would be Senior Melvin Johnson with 21 points. Sophomore Justin Tillman also was a huge help down the stretch with 17 points.
The match up would see 7 scoring ties and 4 lead changes but the Rams pulled ahead in the final minutes to close it out.
The win moves VCU to 15-5 (7-0) on the season. VCU will play at Davidson on Friday, January 29th at 6pm.
