Rams Upset St. Joe’s In Classic A10 Thriller

It wasn’t pretty, but VCU extended its win streak to 5, and moves on to 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play, as the Rams handed St. Joes its 3rd loss of the season. A huge 2nd half performance from VCU senior Melvin Johnson, and an incredible last minute low-post performance from Mo Alie-Cox contributed to an 85-82 win, which  dragged on through the very last seconds of the game.

VCU's Melvin JohnsonMelvin Johnson shot 4-8 in the 2nd half, and finished off with a team-leading 25 points, 7 rebounds. At times, it felt as though he was the only scoring option for VCU. That is, until down the stretch, when Mo Alie-Cox was able to dominate the low-post, finishing off with 14 points (shooting 6-7), 5 rebounds.

Jequan Lewis finished off with 19 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds.

St. Joe’s star senior Isaiah Miles had a career scoring night, putting up 31 points, and shooting 11-14 overall. He and D’Andre Bembry (17 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds) ran the show for St. Joe’s, though Bembry struggled, shooting 6-19 overall. Isaiah Miles had back to back TO BACK 3 pointers by the 7:00 mark, and looked to be taking the game into his own hands, but VCU never gave up, chipping away at a 12 point lead in the last 4 minutes of the game.

VCU will rest until this Sunday, where they will play their second A10 road game against Saint Louis, who are 0-1 in conference play, and currently suffering a 5 game losing streak. That game will air at 4pm on NBC Sports.
