Recap: VCU pushes win streak to 12, handle La Salle in Philly 88-70
VCU traveled to Philadelphia Wednesday to take on La Salle as Coach Wade and the Rams looked to extend their winning streak to 12. The fans at the intimate Tom Gola Arena would leave unhappy as VCU handed them their 15th loss on the season, 88-70.
Senior Melvin Johnson would go off on the Explorers, lighting up the field for 30 points, 20 of those in the first half. He would go 8 of 13 from behind the arc, 10-19 overall.
Johnson would also pass VCU Ram, Troy Daniels, on the all time three point list. The Ram with the next highest 3 point total is B.A. Walker.
But it wasn’t Johnson all by himself. VCU also received help from Sophomore guard, Jonathan Williams, who scored 14 on the night. Sophomore Justin Tillman would be right behind with 13 points and 4 rebounds.
VCU took the lead early and it was never really close. The Ram’s largest lead would be 22 points with about 5 minutes left in the game.
Despite the scoring disparity, field goal shooting percentage was closer than one may think. VCU shot 52.5% from the field. The Explorers shot 46%.
Defense was key for the Rams tonight. La Salle redshirt Sophomore, Jordan Price, had a huge game last time these two teams met in Richmond with 34 points. The Rams didn’t forget that and kept him to just 10 points on the night.
La Salle turned the ball over 17 times compared to VCU’s 7.
La Salle redshirt Sophomore, Tony Washington, fouled out of the match with 10:50 remaining in the game. He ended the night with 8 rebounds and 6 points.
Tonight marked the return of Junior Jordan Burgess. Burgess has not played since January 5th against St. Joe’s game where, shortly after, he suffered a broken finger.
VCU moves to 17-5 (9-0) on the season and will host George Washington University on Saturday, February 6th at 12pm.
