Video: Colonials snap VCU’s winning streak, 72-69 [INSIDER]

The George Washington Colonials entered the Siegel Center on Saturday looking to snap the Rams 12 game winning streak. Coming off a win against Davidson, the Colonials were ready for VCU’s fight and the intense atmosphere of the Stuart C. Siegel Center. In a game that saw 9 lead changes, it would be George Washington University who would end up on top, 72-69.

The first half was a battle that would see VCU up by just 2, 31-29, when it reached the end. The start of the second saw VCU take their largest lead of 9 points just 2 minutes in. The Colonials wouldn’t make it easy for VCU the rest of the way.

The game came down to the final minute as George Washington hit a three to go up by 2 points with under 60 seconds remaining. VCU would get a gift in the form of a GWU miss off an easy lay in. The rebound set up VCU with the final play.

After a timeout by the Rams, Junior Jequan Lewis had 10 seconds to run a play that found Senior Melvin Johnson in the corner for a contested three that would not connect with anything. Senior Korey Billbury was there for the game tying put back but was unable to put it in.

VCU would see 4 players score in double digits on the afternoon. Lewis led all with 16. While Johnson, Junior Mo Alie-Cox and Junior Doug Brooks ended with 12.

VCU moves to 17-6 (9-1) on the season. VCU will travel to Massachusetts to play UMass on Thursday, February 11th at 7pm. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
