After a convincing win over Saint Louis on Saturday, Ram nation was hungry for another victory. This time, VCU would face Rhode Island on Tuesday night at the electric Stuart C. Siegel Center. VCU escaped with adding another conference victory as they handled Rhody, 83-67.
Getting just his third start in his collegiate career (2nd consecutively), Sophomore Jonathan Williams got the crowd going early Tuesday night by feeding red shirt Junior, Mo Alie-Cox for a power dunk to open the game which would set the tone for the night.
VCU opened up early on Rhode Island to take control of the lead and never relinquish it. VCU kept it to about a 20 point lead for most of the second half. Their largest lead would be 22 with 11:45 remaining in the game.
Rhode Island did not go away without a fight and managed to get in the paint at will. Rhode Island was able to cut into VCU’s lead, making it just a 8 point game with 4:20 minutes left to play. But that would be as close as Rhode Island would get.
Coach Wade’s defense would recover 16 turnovers by Rhody and convert them for 22 points on the night. VCU would turn the ball over just 8 times on the evening. VCU’s defense held the (Rhode Island) Rams to just 44% shooting from the field, going 27 of 62.
Alie-Cox led all scorers with 21 points while senior Melvin Johnson would be right behind, chipping in 19 points on the win. Senior Korey Billbury would also get into the double digits with 14 points.
The win moves VCU to 19-7 (11-2) on the season and VCU will host crosstown rival, Richmond on Friday evening.
