Here’s the good news: tonight’s 75-73 VCU loss to Queens doesn’t count as a loss on VCU’s 2016-17 season record. But here’s the bad news: while it technically doesn’t matter, everything we saw actually happened.
The Royals of Queens University led their DI opponent for the majority of tonight’s contest and proved too tough for the Rams, turning the black and gold over 25 times while hitting 47.8% of their threes, a recipe for VCU’s first exhibition loss in a very long time.
VCU struggled to hit shots all night, connecting on just 36.4% of their attempts to Queens 48.83% shooting including a game winning Royals layup with under 2 seconds remaining to steal the game for the visitors.
JeQuan Lewis led all players with 24 points and hit six of his 10 threes.
Justin Tillman added 15 points of his own and a game-high nine rebounds. Tillman finished 6-9 from the field.
Mo Alie-Cox rounds out the group of double-digit scorers, getting nine of his 11 points at the charity stripe. The senior big was bottled up for just two points in the first half and finished the game just 1-3 from the field.
VCU will look to turn the page next Friday at 7PM when hosting UNC Asheville in the Ram’s regular season opener.
