Friday night’s game was more than just a start to another season on Broad street. It marked the start of VCU’s 50th basketball season as well as the 100th consecutive sellout at the Siegel Center. But to Ram fans, it also marked the return of Coach Mike Rhoades to VCU and it also marked his first official win as a head coach as VCU beat Grambling State, 94-65.
It was fairly even scoring for the Rams in a game that saw 5 VCU players score in double digits. Sophomore De’Riante Jenkins and seniors Justin Tillman and Johnny Williams all led with 14 points each. Sophomore Malik Crowfield had 10 points and senior Khris Lane had 11 points.
Williams also had 5 assists on the night while Tillman grabbed 10 rebounds, making that his 17th career double double. VCU out rebounded the Grambling State Tigers 49-35.
VCU shot 45% on the night, going 34-75 on the night and 44% from behind the arc, 15-34.
VCU will play North Florida on Monday, November 13th at 7pm at the Siegel Center.
