Hot first-half shooting propels VCU past Fordham, 76-63

Before a sellout crowd in Richmond, VCU (9-5, 1-0) officially opened A10 conference play with a win over Fordham University, 76-63.

VCU shot an impressive 67% from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play, and closed the half on a  14-2 run.

VCU led for the entire 40 minutes of action.

Justin Tillman led all scorers on the afternoon with 23 points. He also secured a game-high 14 rebounds.

This was the third straight double-double for Tillman, and his fifth on the season. It is the eighth straight contest that Tillman has eclipsed double-digit points.

In his return to action, Issac Vann found the bottom of the net 3 times for 9 points. He was also responsible for a team-high 5 assists.

De’Riante Jenkins joined Tillman in the double-digit scoring column with 14 points.

Three VCU players dishes out at least 4 assists: Vann (5), Jenkins (4), and senior Jonathan Williams (4).

Malik Crowfield was the only other Ram in double digit scoring with 10 points.

Will Tavares led all Fordham scorers with 20 points.

Fordham started the second half on a 15-4 run and was able to pull within 7 points with 12:21 left in the contest, but could get no closer.

Today’s win was the fourth in a row for VCU—the longest win streak of the season for the Rams.

It was also the 109th consecutive sellout for the Rams in the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

VCU will return to action on Wednesday, January 3rd when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Hawks of St. Josephs University. That game is set to tip-off at 7pm EST.
