VCU relied on its defense to hold-off Winthrop, 69-55. The Eagles ranked 19th in the nation in scoring offense coming into tonights contest.
Both teams (VCU 5, WU 3) started the evening with a bevy of turnovers as Winthrop jumped out to a 4-0 lead. A layup by Justin Tillman would break a 10-10 tie, and from there the Rams would retain their control of the game.
VCU recorded 17 turnovers on the stat sheet; Winthrop would cough the ball up 15 times.
Justin Tillman lead the Rams with a game-high 22 points and team-high 11 rebounds. Tonights game marked the 6th straight contest that Tillman tallied at least 20 points.
Winthrop opened the second half going 3-3 from beyond the arc—after going 0-11 in the first 20 minutes. The Eagles shot 3-25 for 12% on the night.
VCU would shoot 36% while going 10-28 from downtown.
With 10:55 remaining in the game, Justin Tillman scored a turnaround layup to net 1000 points for his career. He is the 38th Ram to achieve the accomplishment.
Xavier Cooks 17 point and 12 rebound performance would rally the Eagles to within a 6 point game with 11:48 to play in the second half.
But, a pair of back-to-back three-pointers from Mike’l Simms would help push the Rams back out to a 13 point lead.
The Eagles wouldn’t get closer than 11 points for the remainder of the night.
Simms would contribute 16 points and 5 rebounds off the bench for the Rams. VCU would record 24 bench points in total on the evening.
De’Riante Jenkins was the only other Ram in double-digits with 13 points. He also accounted for 5 rebounds.
The Rams will return to action Friday, December 22nd at 7pm as they host VMI.
