Rams drop nail-biter in overtime to Hawks, 87-81

VCU (9-6, 1-1) and St. Joseph’s are known for tightly contested matches against each other, and tonights game proved no different as the Rams fell in overtime, 87-81.

The Rams, after giving up 46 points in the first half, used a 36-30 second half performance to force overtime in Philadelphia.

It was the Hawks who controlled overtime though using an 11-5 advantage to seal the game in front of their home crowd.

A10 teams are 8-0 this season at home after tonights game, as no road team has been able to steal a victory.

Justin Tillman led the Rams with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebound performance. It was the seniors fourth consecutive double-double, and his sixth overall on the season.

As time expired in regulation, Tillman made a three-pointer that would have won the game for the Rams. But, after reviewing the replay it was called back and 5 minutes were added to the clock in overtime.

De’Riante Jenkins netted 16 points on the night to go along with a team-high 5 assists.

Issac Vann was the only other Ram to tally double-digit points with 13 points.

St. Josephs benefitted themselves from the free throw line were they shot 29-38.

In contrast, VCU was 5-7 from the charity stripe for the evening.

The Rams also turned the ball over a season-high 20 times.

VCU will return to action on Saturday, January 6th, once again in Philadelphia, as they take on La Salle. That matchup is set to tip at 2:00 PM EST.
