After a two game road trip to the city of brotherly love last week, VCU returned to the Siegel Center Tuesday for a later than usual, 8pm tip off with Duquesne. The Dukes are led by first year head coach Keith Dambrot. Dambrot has turned the Dukes around but despite leading big in the first half, the Rams battled back to get the 78-67 win.
It wasn’t all fun and games. Other than the first 15 seconds, VCU trailed the entire first half. Duquesne’s largest lead was 13 with just over 4 minutes left in the first half.
Senior Justin Tillman, usually VCU’s leading scorer, struggled for a majority of the game. Tillman didn’t score his first basket until over 4 minutes into the second half. He would end the night with his 6th consecutive double double and 8th on the season with 10 points and an impressive 17 rebounds.
Senior Johnny Williams led all Rams in scoring with 21 points on the night and contributed 4 assists. Right behind him was sophomore Issac Vann with 15 points.
The win moves VCU to 11-6 (3-1) on the season. The Rams will travel to Dayton on Friday January 12th, to face their former coach Anthony Grant and the Dayton Flyers at 7pm on ESPN2.
