Team Ram Nation is slowly building this season’s roster for the mostly-VCU alumni team’s third consecutive TBT (www.thetournament.com) run and after signing up Ram three-point legends Jamal Shuler and B.A. Walker, have added another sharpshooter to the roster, this time coming in the form of VCU all-time three-point makes leader, Melvin Johnson.
A 2016 VCU graduate, Johnson ranks sixth all-time in points scored at VCU and first in three-point makes with 285 career threes, just ahead of Walker’s previous record of 269.
Johnson has played professionally the past two seasons in Italy, most recently with Bertram Tortona in Italy’s Serie A2 division where he averaged a team-high 18.5 points per contest and connected on 39.8% of his 196 attempted threes.
The Bronx, NY native was a part of four consecutive NCAA tournament teams at VCU, averaging a career-high 17.4 points his senior season on Broad St.
This year’s “The Basketball Tournament” (aka TBT) will come to Richmond, with Ram Nation’s first two potential games being played at the Arthur Ashe Center. Ram Nation has competed the past two summers in the $2 million winner-take-all tournament, advancing in to the “Super16” in the team’s first attempt, then the quarterfinal round of 8 the following season, being defeated by the undefeated three-time champs, Overseas Elite, both times.
Teams are entered into the field via fan votes and TBT at-large selection. You can become a fan of team Ram Nation and potentially earn a share of the team’s winnings by registering as a fan at www.thetournament.com. The top vote-recruiting fan earns $40,000 of the tournament champion team’s winnings, with a total of $200,000 of that team’s final take being split among the top-201 fans who signed up in support of that team.
