After beating Temple on Monday night, VCU advanced to face St. John’s University in the championship game of the GotPrint.com Legends Classic, presented by Old Trapper. In a game that took more than 40 minutes, it ended in a hard fought loss for the Rams, 87-86.
Junior Issac Vann led all Rams in scoring on a career night, scoring 30 points. Vann also contributed 11 rebounds.
Junior De’Riante Jenkins chipped in 14 points and made 4 of 8 three pointers. Junior Marcus Evans scored 12 points and was hoping for a foul call on the final shot in overtime at the buzzer that would have given the Rams a chance to win it.
Maybe one of the most efficient Rams was junior Malik Crowfield. In 21 minutes, Crowfield clocked 13 points, shooting 5 of 7 from the field and connecting on 3 of 5 three pointers.
The game saw 12 lead changes from both teams but it was VCU who held the lead for 33 minutes but not when it counted the most.
A thorn in the side of the black and gold tonight were turnovers. In the first half alone, VCU turned it over 13 times and 22 overall, allowing SJU to combine for 21 points off of VCU’s fumbles.
From both teams, 5 players reached 4 fouls and SJU had 2 players foul out on the night.
The loss moves VCU to 4-1 on the season. The Rams will host former CAA conference mate, Hofstra University on Saturday, November 24th at 7pm. The game will be televised on MASN.
