Recap: VCU dominates Rhode Island en route to 76-42 win

With tonights 76-42 win over Rhode Island—and a helpful Davidson loss to Dayton earlier in the evening—the Rams of VCU claimed sole possession of first place in the A10 standings.

The game started innocent enough as Rhode Island jumped out to a 4-0 lead. But VCU remained poised and fought back to eventually take the 7-6 lead off an Isaac Vann layup. VCU wouldn’t relinquish the lead again the remainder of the contest.

If not for a buzzer beater by Jeff Dowtin to end the first half the Rams of Rhode Island would have failed to cross the 20 point threshold. Dowtin ended the night with a team-high 14 points.

VCU’s defense continued to smother the Rhode Island offense in the second half allowing only four field goals from the floor.

Of the 20 points URI scored in the second half, 11 of those came from the free throw line.

Marcus Santos-Silva led all-scorers on the evening—and secured his fifth double-double of the season—with a 19 point, 12 rebound performance.

Just one game after scoring the winning field goal against Dayton, Marcus Evans narrowly missed joining teammate Santos-Silva with the double-double. Evans ended the evening with 9 points, 9 assists, and only 2 turnovers.

De’Riante Jenkins continued his hot-shooting performance while putting in four of six shots from downtown for 66.7%. He ended the night shooting 5-9 overall and notching the only other double-digit scoring performance for VCU with 14 points. He also added 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals to his stat line.

This game marked the 131st consecutive sellout at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

VCU will return to action Saturday, February 23rd, as they host the Colonials of George Washington. That game is set to tip at 2pm EST.
