Obi Toppin scored 24 points and Jalen Crutcher scored 20 as the #13 Dayton Flyers (15-2) defeated the VCU Rams (12-5) in Dayton, 79-65. The VCU loss ends the Rams’ 4-game winning streak against the Flyers, and marks a 2-game losing streak in Atlantic 10 play.
Bones Hyland and De’Riante Jenkins made up for nearly half of the Rams points, leading VCU in scoring with 16 points each, while Marcus Santos-Silva had 12 points, 9 rebounds. The effort was not enough to defeat the red hot Dayton Flyers, who have soared through the AP rankings in one of their best seasons to date.
The Flyers went on a 12-2 run to end the 1st half, extended their lead by 5 points (Dayton 38, VCU 33). VCU freshman guard Bones Hyland led the Rams in scoring with 12 points in just 12 minutes of play, an impressive performance by Hyland against the #13 ranked Flyers. Issac Vann had 7, Marcus Santos-Silva had 6 heading into the half.
Dayton eventually went on a 20-0 run in the 2nd half, giving the Flyers a 22 point lead with 11:08 remaining. VCU would then follow up with a 12-4 run of their own, but would not be able to continue that momentum.
VCU will return to Richmond, VA to face Saint Bonventure (11-5) on Saturday, a team who are 3-0 in conference play.
