Recap: Simms leads VCU to victory in conference opener, 64-46

VCU (11-3, 1-0) opened the A-10 conference portion of their schedule with a resounding 64-46 victory of the Rams of Fordham.

Local product, Mike’L Simms, opened the game with a basket for VCU to take a 2-0 lead.

Onyi Eyisi hit Fordham’s next shot to tie the game at 2-2, but then that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the contest.

Eyisi ended the night as the leading scorer for Fordham with 13 points.

Simms led the Rams in both scoring and rebounding on the evening with 14 points and 8 boards.

It was 32-17 VCU before Fordham used an 8-0 run to pull within 7 points with just moments to go until the half.

But, a buzzer beating three-point by Bones Hyland kicked VCU back out to a 10 point lead at the half.

Hyland finished the night with 9 points and 2 assists.

In the second half, Marcus Santos-Silva capped a 16-1 VCU run with a dunk and a free throw to put the home team ahead, 57-31.

Santos-Silva ended the night with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists. The junior forward also added a block and a steal to his stat line.

VCU’s bench out-scored the Fordham bench, 23-9.

Fordham also turned the ball over 18 times resulting in 22 points for VCU.

The Rams return to action on Sunday, January 5th, as the head to Northern, Virginia to take on the Patriots of George Mason. That game is set to tip at 12:00PM EST and will be broadcast NBCSN.
