Senior, Corey Douglas, scored the first 5 points for the Rams as VCU (6-2) won their fourth straight contest of the season. Douglas would finished with 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals in the Rams 93-68 win.
Western Carolina was aggressive though and fought back to run a mostly balanced first half. The two teams seemed to mostly trade baskets until the Catamounts tied the game at 29 points with 4:45 minutes before the half.
From there, Bones Hyland poured in 8 straight for the Rams, including his third three of the opening 20 minutes. Hyland finished the night with 31 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals. The 31 points sets a new career-high for the sophomore guard—this comes just two games after setting his previous career-high of 30 points.
VCU closed the half on a 14-1 run. The lone WCU free throw coming from a technical foul awarded to the Catamounts.
The second half opened as the first half closed with Hyland knocking down one of his six triples of the night—VCU converted this into a four point play and extended their lead.
The Rams continued to pile on the points in the second half while shooting 65% in the final 20 minutes. VCU closed the night shooting 59% overall (41% – 3ptr; 90% FT).
Freshman, Jamir Watkins, contributed 15 points while netting three triples of his own.
VCU only made 8 turnovers in forty minutes of action tonight. Western Carolina turned the ball over 20 times leading to 29 points for the Rams.
Vince Williams was the only other Ram in double digit scoring with 10 points to go with his game-high 6 rebounds. Williams also tied Ace Baldwin for a team-high 4 assists. Baldwin had zero turnovers on the night
VCU returns to action Tuesday, Dec. 22nd, as the Rams travel Baton Rouge to take on the Tigers of LSU. That game is set to tip at 9pm EST.
