VCU (10-5; 3-1 A10) lost it’s first game since Nov. 26 2021 as the Rams traveled to the preseason favorite St. Bonaventure to take on the Bonnies.
The 73-53 loss for the Rams snapped a 7-game win streak.
With 14:45 left in the first half, Jalen Adaway hit a layup for the Bonnies to give them the 9-7 lead.
Over the course of the first half the Rams kept the contest close—at one point pulling within one point after Ace Baldwin found Jalen DeLoach for the dunk.
But, the Bonnies used the final two minutes of the first half to rattle off a 5-0 run and take the 34-28 advantage into the locker room.
The first five minutes of the second half proved to be too much for the Rams to overcome.
St. Bonaventure used a 17-2 run of those 7 minutes to give them all the space they needed to effectively close out the game.
While both teams shot an identical 5-6 from the free throw line in the first half, the Bonnies drastically out paced the Rams in the second half.
In total, 18 of the Bonnies 39 second half points came from the free throw line—on 21 attempts; while the Rams scored 1 point on attempts.
VCU did a better job of protecting the ball in this game—committing only 13 turnovers—but St. Bonaventure only ended the night with 11 turnovers.
Marcus Tsohonis led the Rams in scoring as his hot-hand remained steady from downtown. He finished the night with 14 points on 4-8 shooting from range.
Ace Baldwin led the Rams with 5 assists to go with his 4 rebounds and 7 points.
Vince Williams was the only other Ram in double-digit scoring with 12 points on 4-5 shooting. He also had 4 rebounds and a team-high 3 steals on the evening.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday, January 18 as they host the Wildcats of Davidson. This is a make-up game from a previously postponed January 2nd date.
