Mike Rhoades rumored to take Penn State head coaching job

Rumors have been swirling over the last 72 hours that VCU head coach Mike Rhoades has been considering an offer from Penn State for its head coaching vacancy. Jon Rothstein tweeted last night that the offer includes a salary in excess of $3 million per year:

This morning, Pete Thamel further substantiated that rumor indicating that Rhoades is working through a few contract issues, with a decision expected today:

Dick Weiss, a highly reputable sports writer, posted last night that this deal is done:

Penn State as a basketball program is not an upgrade in comparison to VCU, but perhaps more of a lateral move. PSU’s basketball facilities are second-rate, and the program has not seen the level of success the Rams have realized over the last decade. However, it’s hard to pass up on an offer of $3 million / year. Further, Mike Rhoades is a central Pennsylvania native, so a return to his home state may have certain appeal.

Where things have become really interesting is that it appears Utah State’s Ryan Odom may be offered the VCU head coaching vacancy, if it is in fact true that Rhoades is leaving. Weiss reported late last night:

It’s difficult to say with any degree of certainty where things stand, as these are currently just rumors and reports. However, one can infer that this is almost certainly a reality simply by looking at the recent tweets by Jalen DeLoach and Ace Baldwin:

At this point, with the silence from coaching staff, and rapid development and interest in this story, we should expect to know a final decision by the end of the day.

R-MC had expectations due to the legacy before Rhoades stepped foot in Ashland, but it was still D3. He took a step way up in joining Shaka’s staff, but he was just the assistant, not head coach. Rice was abysmal and almost no expectations. Stepping to VCU as head coach put him into the fire, and he may have gotten burned by it. We won’t know, but the way he’s throwing shade to the fans it almost appears like a “I wanted to be here for life, but YOU didn’t” kind of thing.
He's right on that last part if he was never gonna win us a game in the tournament

I think QAnon body snatched a few VRN people and brainwashed you. Some of you sound like Marj or bimbo boebert with your conspiracy theories about MR
The worst conspiracy theory of them all is "you guys were mean to MR so he left and we'll be bad for years"

You wanted to have a 195 offensive ranking for life? You'd never win an NCAAT game.
And we never did

We discussed here here on VRN when MR was introduced.
I find it interesting that some of the people who wanted him gone during the season ended up getting all huffy and upset when he actually did leave. Actually, I find it more than interesting. I find it funny.
Please name one of these people

Perhaps. One thing I am very sure of is that it will shutdown real quick if MR starts winning at PSU. Hard to complain about when a team wins.....oops, forget that we are VCU fans and as the last year has shown, some of us will complain whether we win or lose.
When do you think your butthurt towards our fans will heal? You've been whining about us since Rhoades left.

He's obviously mixing up metaphors. Your thumb has its own pulse so you never use it to check for a pulse. I think he means "finger on that pulse."
He's got his pulse on the scale!

Our style of play was so hard to watch that I stopped watching altogether for the most part. I'd follow along on espns play by play thing unless it was an important game.

So, I am thrilled for the change.

You would DM me though:lol: I think we were both shocked at how much the team won in spite of a horrible offense to watch as a fan. Ace had lots to do with that and of course great D.
No doubt the defense was great. We did a tremendous job of uglying up each game.

I'm optimistic because I have little doubt that we just upgraded at the head coach position
