<a href="http://www.vcuramnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/bonniesvcu.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-13790" src="http://www.vcuramnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/bonniesvcu-300x214.jpg" alt="VCU St Bonaventure Basketball" width="300" height="214" /></a>VCU's Jordan Burgess tied a hard fought contest with 18 seconds to play, only to see St. Bonaventure's Marcus Posley win a second consecutive game for the Bonnies at the buzzer, connecting on a circus shot between Mo Alie-Cox and Burgess to drop the Rams in the 73-71 Bona win.
The Rams got out to a slow start once again, seeing the Bonnies open the game with a 9-1 advantage before the black and gold fought back to pull within two, but never taking the lead in the half and entering halftime down 32-31.
And that was pretty much the story of the game.
St. Bonaventure had a number of mini runs throughout the contest but were never able to really bury the Rams. The black and gold fought without starters Treveon Graham and Briante Weber, but didn't have enough to get over the hump in front of a tough road atmosphere and ultimately came up short at the buzzer.
The Weber-less Rams forced just nine turnovers, tying a season-low seen last in VCU's 24-point loss to Villanova.
VCU was led by freshman Terry Larrier with a team-high 15 points in his 25 minutes off the bench. Larrier was 5-10 from the field and added seven rebounds for the Rams.
VCU's new starting point guard, JeQuan Lewis, played admirably, scoring 14 points to go with six assists, four steals and two rebounds and had zero turnovers. Lewis was 4-10 from the field but all four baskets came from distance.
Jordan Burgess grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go with nine points in the loss while Mo Alie-Cox finished with a season-high five blocks for VCU.
Melvin Johnson was VCU's only other double-digit scorer with 11 points but finished just 1-5 from distance.
The loss drops VCU to 18-5 on the season and 8-2 in conference play, but VCU remains atop the A-10 and in charge of their regular season destiny has they hold a head-to-head tie-breaker over Rhode Island, currently the only other team with just two A-10 losses. VCU can pull a game ahead of the northern Rams with a Richmond win over Rhody tomorrow afternoon.
VCU returns home to face the Explorers of La Salle (13-9, 5-4) Wednesday evening at 7PM.
