In a significant boost for VCU's men's basketball team, sophomore guard Brandon Jennings has announced his decision to remain with the Rams under newly appointed head coach Phil Martelli Jr. This commitment comes after Jennings had entered the NCAA transfer portal following the departure of former head coach Ryan Odom to the University of Virginia.

Jennings, a standout from St. Christopher's School in Richmond, played in all 35 games during the previous season. He averaged just under three points and 13 minutes per game, contributing to the Rams' 28–7 record and their Atlantic 10 Conference championship. Jennings has carved out a key role at VCU with his gritty, defensive-minded play and ability to steady the offense off the bench. Though his numbers don’t jump off the stat sheet, his impact is felt in the flow of the game - whether it's pressuring the ball, making the right pass, or giving the Rams energy in key stretches. Jennings brings toughness and consistency, traits that often go unnoticed but are vital to winning programs. As VCU transitions to the Phil Martelli Jr. era, Jennings’ return gives the Rams a proven, reliable guard who understands the program’s identity and can help lead a roster in flux.

The coaching change at VCU saw Phil Martelli Jr. take the helm on March 26, 2025. Martelli Jr. brings a wealth of experience, having led Bryant University to a 43-25 record over two seasons and an NCAA Tournament appearance. His appointment aims to build upon VCU's established success and elevate the program further.

Jennings' decision to stay is a positive development for the Rams, who are in the process of solidifying their roster for the upcoming season. As of April 8, 2025, VCU's active roster includes only five players, with expectations of additional commitments and potential returns in the coming weeks. One key player to keep an eye on is Luke Bamgboye, who also entered the portal, but would be a key player to return and provide a solid foundation for the Rams in 2025-2026.

This retention underscores the confidence that returning players have in Coach Martelli Jr.'s vision for the team. As the Rams prepare for the 2025–26 season, Jennings' experience and familiarity with the program are anticipated to play a crucial role in maintaining the team's competitive edge.
