Defense sparks offense as VCU takes down Ramblers, 78-64

VCU (12-5; 3-1 A10) opened up their offense in the second half en route to a comfortable, 78-64, win against conference newcomer, Loyola Chicago.

The Rams wasted no time in showcasing the infamous havoc style defense as the Ramblers turned the ball over 15 times in the first half, and 22 overall on the night.

Those missteps led to 31 points for the Rams, who only turned the ball over 12 times across 40 minutes of action.

Just one game out from their hot shooting performance against Davidson, the Rams continued to see the bottom of the net as they poured in 57% overall attempts from the floor; while also going 50% from distance.

Jalen DeLoach led the Rams with both 16 points and his 7 rebounds. He shot an efficient 63% from the floor and connect on 6 of his 9 free throw attempts.

Overall, VCU netted 26 points from the free throw line on 36 attempts for the night.

Ace Baldwin was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe as he chipped in 13 points and his game-high 8 assists.

The Ramblers led by as many as 9 points in the first half, but the Rams climbed back into the fight.

A 6-0 run by VCU, capped by a Brandon Johns layup, tied the game at 20 points in the first half.

Two lead changes and two ties later, Jayden Nunn connected on a jumper to break a 26-26 knot.

After a Loyola triple opened the second half, Nick Kern dunked the ball and grabbed the Rams their final lead of the evening.

In his first start of the season, Kern tallied up 7 points on 75% shooting from the floor.

Nunn, Johns Jr, and Jamir Watkins each scored 10 points for the Rams.

David Shriver was the 6th Ram to go for double-digit scoring on the night as he locked in on 12 points.

Just one game out from his 18 point performance, the transfer guard connected on all three of his triple attempts as he shot a perfect 4-4 from the floor.

The Rams have now won 7 of their last 8 games as they look to wrap up the second in a tough two-game road stretch.

VCU will return to action on Friday, Jan. 13th as they head to Ohio to take on the Dayton Flyers. That game is set to tip at 9:00pm ET and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
