Explosive scoring guard Tyler Maye commits to VCU

Mike Rhoades and Co. picked up another big piece to the future of VCU hoops today, securing a commitment from explosing-scoring Farmville, NC native, Tyler Maye.

The 6'1 Farmville Central point guard averaged 36 points for the Jaguars this past season to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Maye averaged 25 points during his 2016 state champion junior campaign.

“Tyler is a great basketball player,” opposing Beddingfield coach Joseph Dvozenja told The News&Observer this past season. “He is going to make his shots, no matter what kind of defense you throw at him. And he is very unselfish and has a very good basketball IQ.”

Maye inherits a spot vacated by former commit and fellow Carolina native, Lavar Batts, who broke his commitment with this offseason's coaching change. He chose the Rams over the likes of Nebraska, Kansas State, Charlotte and ECU after a visit this past weekend.

Maye becomes the first backcourt player of Mike Rhoades' first recruiting class at VCU, joining Sean Mobley, Marcus Santos-Silva and Lewis Djonkam, all of whom stand 6'7 or taller. Rhoades also recently added Longwood graduate transfer Khris Lane (17.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and Rice transfer Marcus Evans (19 ppg, 3.7 apg). Lane is immediately eligible while Evans will be forced to sit out the following season due to NCAA undergrad transfer rules.
