Lewis reigns from deep to help VCU ground Hawks, 91-81.

In a game that saw 13 lead changes and was tied-up 7 different times, all in the first half, the Rams relied heavily on the three point shooting of JeQuan Lewis to beat the visiting Hawks of St. Joseph’s University, 91-81.

The senior guard set a personal career-high for three pointers made with 6 in the first half alone. Lewis had 18 points at intermission and would end the night with 34 points on 9-15 (60%) from three point range and 7-9 (77%) from the free throw line. His 34 points were also a new career-high, and came only one game after scoring 27 points against Davidson.

Justin Tillman added 14 points and 13 rebounds to the Rams totals. This is the fourth consecutive game the Junior has recorded a double-double. Tonight’s game also marks the 12th straight game Tillman has scored in double figures.

VCU held only a 4 point lead at halftime, but came out of the locker room to score 7 straight points. That 11 point lead would be the largest cushion either team could rally for the evening.

If three pointers were the name of the game in the first half for the Rams, then free throws would be the talking point of the second half.

VCU scored their final 17 points from the free throw line while scoring no field goals in the final 7:17 minutes of play.

Samir Doughty scored 6 of his 10 points from the free throw line in the final 2:04 of the game. Doughty finished just two rebounds short of a triple-double on the night (10pts/10ast/8reb).

VCU improves to 21-5 overall and 11-2 in the A10. The Rams will travel to crosstown rival, Richmond on Friday, February 17 for a 9:00PM tip-off. The game will be broadcast on ESPN/ESPN2.
